Yeah, there are a couple of motels there. Last summer, when I was visiting home from Japan, my girlfriend (now wife) and I stayed at the Gulf Breeze Motel for a night. It's a small and cozy motel, at the beginning of what I would consider to be the west end.

Well, if you aren't familiar with the Dauphin Island area, you should check your facts before you accuse someone of being wrong.

I grew up in New Orleans but my family spent summers at D.I. I have good memories of the place (1960's & 70's).

Nah, no hurt feelings. I think I was at work doing nothing when I wrote that, and was kinda bored. But yeah, there are motels on DI, and one is called Gulf Breeze.

For living on DI, have a LOT of money. Good luck in getting insurance on a home if that's your goal. Just don't get a beachfront home expecting to keep your home or your yard as erosion is very rapidly eating up the western half of the island. If you stay in the vegetation heavy areas where there is good root established plants and trees, then a home (on stilts of course!) would be a good choice... but only if you have the money to burn. My ALFA agent explained to me insuring a $150,000 home for hurricane, flood, wind, and homeowners (you still can get it but most of the big insurers write it through another smaller company) with a 15% deductible would run $22,000 a year, up from only $3,400 8 years ago. IF you do build or buy, hopefully you can buy it outright and just use your savings account for your insurance like so many in Florida have opted to do with their paid off homes.
