Possible mobile steel mill relocation-- best places to live
My husband is considering taking a promotion to the new steel mill in the Mobile area. I am not even sure what area of Mobile it is to be located. We have two children ages 2 and 5, and the 5 year old will be starting school this year. I am looking for a family friendly community with good schools. Those are my top priorities. My husband would like to keep the commute less than 30-40 minutes if at all possible. We would be looking into a housing range of under 185,000, and of course I would want to live in a safe area. I am flexible on the size of the town but would like to be within 10- 15 minutes of a decent sized grocery store.
We currently live in Indiana and a warm change would certainly be welcome.
Please provide me any information on the communities you feel would best fit our needs. I used this board the last time I moved, to northern Indiana and I am hopeful that the Alabma section will be just as informative.

Satsuma will be your best bet. There are new subdivisions being built and also new schools, very safe community. It would be a short commute to the mill. It's close enough to Mobile to enjoy the conveniences, but far enough away to avoid the crime.

What is Satsuma like? How are the parks? Distance to shopping? Any areas to look for especially or to avoid?

Satsuma is about 30 minutes away from the city. Not really close to any shopping. There are no noticible "parks" to my knowledge in Satsuma (if we are speaking of what most consider to be a park), but you will be surrounded by pretty good natural surroundings. There are no major areas to avoid, as it is just a quiet country-style suburb. Besides, in the general Mobile metro, if you are looking at houses that are over 100k (or even remotely close to the 185k you suggested), then you have a 0% chance that the houses you are looking at are in areas you would want to avoid.

Satsuma has always been a small town, but lately it has grown due to people moving from Mobile. There's not much shopping in Satsuma, but it only takes 20 minutes to get to Mobile on I-65 (once in Mobile you'll find pretty much the same kind of shopping that's in any other city). There's also a Super Wal-Mart and several restaurants about ten minutes away in Saraland. Hopefully someone who lives in Mobile County can tell you more about the parks. I live about 40 miles northeast of Satsuma, but I do drive through there when I go to Mobile.

You beat me to it.
It seems like I can get from Mobile to Satsuma in 20 minutes, although if the traffic is heavy it may take 30.

I know several people who work for Thyssennkrupp who live off of Schillinger Rd. between airport and moffett. I'll find out for you how long their commute is and what route they take. It's a great area because it's mobile, but just outside the city limits. You are only minutes from the Semmes Zoo, Lavretta Park (where I take my 3 and 5 yr old to play), Mobile Municipal Park and art gallery, and all the shopping you need.

OK Marissadionne, their commute is between 30-35 minutes depending on traffic. It's a straight shot to Hwy 158 (about 6 mins) and then the rest of the commute is going about 65 mph on Hwy 43. I'm actually going to drive it this weekend bec. I'm really curious as to the best/fastest route.
Dear CMM1959, I wish I could say that I personally know these people, but I only know of them through my friend who is their agent. Sorry!
