Generally, you can access Canal Street by Water Street exit from Eastern Shore or Mobile. Canal Street is clear except WEST of Washington but that's not around where you are trying to get so will not tie you up.
Drop them off on Canal Street right by the Civic center parking lot behind the Civic Center.
