Moving to Mobile?
My husband and I might be moving to alabama at the beggining of the new year. He is from up state alabama and has never been to the area. So neither of us know anything about it. Where is the safiest/niciest but affordable area to live. We will be renting and saving to buy a house later on. So what apartments are good and what areas are nice for buying a house. What is there to do. Are the hurricans bad and how much higher is home insurance. What kinda of resturants/shopping is there. Any info will be much appreciated. Thanks

Look at the apartments along Grelot Rd.
Regency Gates
Lenox Gates
Cimmaron Ridge
Timber Ridge (Hillcrest Rd)
....all nice apartments. The grocery stores will mostly be Bruno's, Winn-Dixie, Super Wal-Mart, and Super Target.

You sound like you would really like the area around Grelot Rd. between Cody Rd. and University Blvd.
And it is a nice area ... with some nice apartment complexes around.
As for eateries and grocery stores, it will be chains. But hey, it's all food.

Yeah there's the same chains of every other city (Olive Garden, Carraba's, Ruby Tuesday, Applesbee's, O'Charleys, Outback, Logan's, Lonestar, Cracker Barrel, Golden Corral, Zaxby's, etc, etc).
There are some good local places to eat too, The Banana Docks on Hillcrest @ Old Shell is pretty good. I always liked Big Time Diner on Cottage Hill Rd too. There are also some good seafood places on the causeway, like The Original Oyster House (the best shrimp poboys ) and Felix's Fish Camp.

Where is your job located? What is an acceptable commute time? Schools a concern?

You can look into neighborhoods that are on Cody Rd between Airprt Blvd and Cottagehill Rd any sector of cody Rd past Airport Blvd are not so good and Cody Road past Coattage hill wiil be in a higher price range. Subdivisions that are on Hillcrest fit that price range as well.
