What are the beaches like?
The beaches are quite nice, and I think we sometimes fail to fully appreciate the unique things our coastal area has - things you can't find in Florida (the #1 "beach state") .
Mobile's Mardi Gras heritage has already been mentioned, so I'll add a few bits that might not be as readily apparent.

Lake Shelby at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores is a 750-acre freshwater lake, and it is right across the road from the beach. It is claimed to be the closest sizable freshwater body of water to saltwater in the world.

"Jubilee" is an interesting natural phenomenon of Mobile Bay :
The City of Daphne, Alabama, the Jubilee City. About the Jubilee phenomenon.

The Mobile-Tensaw Delta is the second largest river delta system in the US, and is much better preserved than the largest (Mississippi River).
134,000 acres are preserved as public land.

The Grand Hotel in Point Clear (near Fairhope) dates back to 1847, which is older than any hotel in the state of Florida.
A true resort property, its grounds cover several hundred acres overlooking Mobile Bay.

Dauphin Island's rich French history:

Auto ferries carry visitors between Fort Gaines and Fort Morgan, two antebellum historic sites.

^^^ Wow ! There is also a historic marker that is on the corner of Conti and Royal street downtown that is right on the building where Mr. Cadillac him self lived in Mobile it`s on the side of the Hampton. I would have never thought that the founder of Detroit used to live right here in Mobile on Conti street.
