Yeah, in certain situations the service road is faster because you can avoid the long stop lights.

Publix preparing massive Mobile market entrance
Publix is ever expanding and moving further and further North. They cannot move much further than they already are without building a new warehouse. I work for Publix actually and that has not been floating around just yet... but I am sure it is soon to come. Already the deliveries are having to be rerouted due to demand and driving distance. It just means later deliveries for the store and schedule changes for the associates. In my area a bunch of old Sweetbays (Kash n' Karry) and Albertsons were purchased. They will be gutted and rebuilt soon.

Just heard today from the wife of someone on the Architecture Review Board of Mobile, that Publix is waiting on a distribution center to be built somewhere off of I-10 in Mississippi before they start building Mobile locations. Evidently Daphne and Fairhope are as far as they are willing to build from their current distribution point in Jacksonville FL (the other Alabama locations get their distribution from Atlanta). Once the new distribution center is finished, they will be able to expand all across the gulf coast including New Orleans.
The new Consumer Reports rated Publix in the top 5 grocery chains in the country while Win-Dixie and Wal-mart were both near the bottom.
Another rumored spot for a publix is at the corner of snow and airport, but I have hope against hope that they will build one near downtown.
As far as Airport service roads, They would work so much better if they were one-way roads. The left lane could be merging with Airport and the right lane would be available for turning into businesses. Then, at lights one could make U turns to go the other direction.
It would be fantastic if Airport was limited access with bridges over the major intersections, but that will never happen.

Yeah, I've never shopped at a Publix, but from what I am hearing, I would probably like to. And somewhere more accessible to midtown would be wonderful. I don't plan on driving half-way to Mississippi to go grocery shopping.
