That was where I remember seeing split levels. My DD had a house in Spring Hill that had what could be considered a basement that was actually an enclosed garage. His house was on a hill.

You can't find homes with basements in N. AL either.

My home in Tuscaloosa has a full basement. Around here, it seems that neighborhoods built around the 1960s-70s are more likely to include basements than the developments are.

My house has one, which as you can read is quite uncommon. Actually, it is connected to the garage because we are on a slight hill. The house is pretty unique after the older couple who owned it before us redid it and made it completely their own (his and hers separate master baths, partially enclosed pool and pool house, wine cellar, huge sunroom, etc.). The lay out is kind of strange, but it's nice.
