Sometimes, I can't believe some of these posters and the incorrect advice! You will not need to live in Saraland to work there because it is very close to I-65/and thus I-10. You could live in Midtown Mobile or Spring Hill area if schools are not a big deal. But Saraland just broke off and started their own school system. This will be a good thing in the big picture. HOWEVER, the people I know are not packing up and moving over there at all. If they move, it's to a bigger house in Spring Hill or Midtown. Some will go to Eastern Shore but they are typically people who don't need to network. Mobile is still the center.
It really depends on what you are looking for.... do you want to get to know people? If you just want to drive home every day from work and not be a part of the Mobile community, then suburbs for you. You could live in Spanish Fort or Daphne(both Eastern Shore) and still easily get to Saraland. West Mobile will be way out of the way for a job in Saraland, for most part. You might as well live on Eastern Shore.
Will you or your husband need to network as part of the job? Then you need to live in Midtown or Spring Hill(Mobile's version of Buckhead). My husband needed to network for work and we made a BIG mistake when we moved past Snow Road in West Mobile for 8 years. Those were the "Lost" years, truly. We were pretty young then and didn't think about all that type of stuff. Now we live in Midtown.
Midtown Mobile is not a place "just for singles or partying". My block has a total of 17 kids between 11 houses!!!
Midtown is really the absolutely best place to be location-wise if you want to be in the midst of the restaurants of downtown yet close to the shopping of the Eastern Shore Center. Also, a lot of the important people of Mobile live in certain neighborhoods in Midtown or Spring Hill. Again, it depends on what you need.
If you are being transferred by Ryla, then you are probably pretty high up there, I imagine...just some food for thought. If you wanted to be involved in stuff, you could be. Mobile is more welcoming and diverse than people think.
Probably because a good bit of advice is coming from people who live in the suburbs and, frankly, are not involved in Mobile life.
