Hi Meganlee I have been working in the steel industry over 10 years.
Yes they asked in the first interview about being able to go to Germany. I believe the main operators will be hired first and they will be the ones going and the entry level employees will be hired closer to time for the mill to actually open. I went for my first interview several weeks after the classes and then the second interview was about 6 weeks after my classes. I understand what you are saying about going through it for nothing. If you have any questions fire away I will be glad to answer if I can. I will say it depends on what department you are chose for on when you may be called.

hey cmm 1959,

No, I am not working there I just went on my 2nd interview. From what I have been told is yes they are on track to start up and they will begin hiring for the mills that will start up first like the hot strip, cold mill etc. I would not be surprised to see them delay start up due to the economy but I believe when they start up they will be in good shape due to making the steel elsewhere then shipping slabs here. The way I was told it would work is like all of my experience came in a certain department and that department will be one of the last ones to start up so they may call and offer me a position in another department until they get closer to starting up the other mill then transferring me over.
Now with that said I was laid off in the steel industry and I found another job down here where I just relocated to the area so I am not quite sure I would even go back into the steel industry. The second interview is in front of someone from each department and the department I have the experience in I really didnt understand the reason for some of his questions, the other 3 guys were really really nice but with the 1 other guy if they had offered that day I would have said no.

My second interview was about 2 weeks ago. When they called me they said they are going to start speeding up the hiring and that they had chose to send me to the final stage so I am not sure if there is 2 or 3 interviews after your class but for now I just sit and wait. He said they could call between now and this time next year. I have actually been working on a mill in the steel industry.

Well I am not sure thats what I was told but for some reason when she called she said they were speeding up the hiring process and they had elected for me to skip the next step and go straight to interview in front of the hiring panel so I'm not sure what they meant by that. The waiting til next year that all depends on which mill you are selected for, they are hiring right now for like the hot strip but say you were chosen for the finishing that may be the last mill to start up so it may be next year before they hire people for that mill. When the steel comes from Brazil the first mill it hits will be the hot strip then cold mill then if it goes on it will be Galvanizing then if it goes further Finishing. The galvanizing line may not start til late next year so they will wait and hire for it maybe a little closer to when it is going to start.

Like the first interview you went to they decided you would go carbon steel or stainless steel. They have already hired 80 people for stainless and they said they were not going to hire anymore for it til they get closer to opening. If someone was chosen for stainless in the first interview it could possibly be a while before they get called. If you were chosen for carbon steel side at some point you will interview in front of someone from each department within the carbon steel section. Then they will pick from there what department you would go so it could possibly be some time before you hear anything. What he told me was that having done several things within the industry like overhead cranes, ram tractors etc. they could possibly offer a position doing something like that then transfer me later to a different mill like I have worked on in the past but that it could be between now and this time next year but like I was saying earlier by that point I was not really excited from talking with the one guy so if they had offered I would have said no.
