chyn095 - It is hard to say when you'll get another letter and good answers can be hard to come by. With both AIDT and TK, many answers take the form of "it could be a week or it could be a year". AIDT says that rescheduling classes doesn't affect your chances of getting hired.

I'm in the Detroit area and will be at AIDT in Mobile from September 28th to October 1st. I definitely understand the cost issue with regard to gas and hotel. This trip, however, I'm planning to drive by way of St. Louis, MO. My own mom has had a stroke and I drive in once in awhile to help with the old house.

Chyn095: Request the one week compressed training. That way, you'll only spend 4-5 nights at a local hotel (like the Extended Stay) instead of making the trip weekly for four weeks.

Thyssen Krupp hiring
Does anyone have any information regarding time frames for getting hired? I completed the 32 hours of AIDT training and went for an interview with Thyssen Krupp about two weeks after the class. I was told I would hear back in 4 to 6 weeks. Is this consistent with other experiences?

Yes. To my understanding, the first interview with the TK people is automatic after successful completion of the preceding stages. At that first interview, the HR people determine which part of the mill your skills and knowledge fit best. If that section has been built or is currently under construction with a completion date in the near future, they'll schedule the second interview soon. If, however, the section to which you're directed has not been started yet, then it doesn't make sense to hire for that area yet and interviews would be scheduled later - possibly much later. Unless you know which area you're slated for, it's hard to figure out when to expect the interview.

Thanks Rott. I think I interviewed while you were in class. I was hoping someone may have had more encouraging results than you will hear back in 4 to 6 weeks. I interviewed with the HR rep from carbon and a member of their operating group. I'm afraid I can't hold out much longer due to my employment situation and will probably have to leave the area. Once I leave I doubt I'll be able to make it back even if they do call. I also understood about the first interview being automatic. For all I know after that first interview they dont even see me as a viable candidate even though I thought it went well. Feedback is pretty scarce.

Holding out
I understand that concern very well. My own unemployment benefits will run out soon and I may need to take action earlier than this employer does. The cost of each trip can be over $1,000 when the gasoline, hotels, and 'wear & tear' on one's vehicle is added together. Three or four such trips for an uncertain job can be hard to budget for; it would be easier if something definite existed.
While in the class, I heard from a number of others who had made several trips from a distance. A few went so far as to express the sentiment that this employer was acting in a manner that was inconsiderate of their time and expenses. I don't know how many will hold out; some will accept other positions before ThyssenKrupp makes them an offer. That would be a shame, because those people will go away with the feeling that their time and money was spent without justification.
What would make the costs much easier to accept would be some possibility of reimbursement for mileage for those who are actually hired. I would feel bad for those not hired, but at the same time I must consider the company's position on spending.
Phil, you mentioned leaving the area. Where are you from? Did you move temporarily to Mobile in order to avoid repeated trips? I thought about that, but have a wife and mortgage in Michigan to think about.

I am from South Carolina but have been working, up until July, in Alabama. I am located 200 miles north of Mobile. I decided to stay in Alabama due to the possibility with TK but won't be able to much longer due to obligations and a home in South Carolina. I started the application proccess with TK in June...I'm 4 months down the road but still don't have a firm idea of what will happen. It is certainly difficult timewise. I'll hate it if I can't hang on as I am sure many others can't either so I'm not alone. I really enjoyed the people in my class, there were some really nice, and talented people that I know I would love to work with there. One guy flew in from California, super guy. I guess I'm looking here for some encouragement that there is some history of a second interview sooner than a month and a half after the first. TK has definitely taken a different approach by running people through pre-employment in mass then just letting them sit, but if that is the strategy that is the strategy. I can wait until about the first week in November, then I have to do something different money wise. I have an apartment in Alabama that I wont be able to keep beyond that. I do wish you luck Rott, along with everyone else who is waiting.
