if you would like to Aquelle, you can PM me with questions regarding apartment complexes. Some are not quite safe while others are pretty respectable.

Midtown Mobile should meet all your requirements. It is quaint and affordable(3 bedroom 2 bath, nicely updated bungalow around $150K - $200K) close to downtown attractions, and most streets are very safe. Do not let people scare you and tell you otherwise. Downtown Fairhope is great, but a long commute (40 minutes, roughly) to Mobile, and is very expensive.

I wouldn't live in Midtown myself and wouldn't drive there in the dark; but that's just me. I know people who live in Midtown and love it. Depends on what criteria one is looking for. But then you Really can't go by me because I hate Mobile and just recently moved to another state

Mobile jobs
Hmm...Duncan St Clair...you are correct, I should be more specific. If you have a degree in chemical, mechanical, civil, or computer engineering...jobs exist. A multitude?? Perhaps not...but there is good industry around there and if industry isn't your cup of tea, then perhaps something that factors towards tourism.

Everything changed yesterday. The steel mill announcement means a $3.7 billion capital investment and 2,700 new jobs for Mobile...and maybe we can hope for a rejuvenation of its economy and spirit!

I think you need a trip to Mobile to see the city. I don't think you are going to find a nice little downtown type atmosphere there, just being honest. I live on the Eastern Shore(Spanish Fort/Daphne/Fairhope) and wanted to mention that comment about being on the bluff, well not really the case. The bluff is in Spanish Fort, but it never protects againt the hurricanes, look at the damage to The Grand in Point Clear it was very bad from the last one.
There are some areas off of Dauphin Street that have historic homes and large trees that would probably be what you are looking for, near the hospital and the Spring Hill area but I am sure they are very pricey, like $500k but that's a guess. You may talk to someone about the apartment you are moving to as I've not seen any I would personally live in with my family in Mobile.
I think you are going to find more of what you are looking for in Fairhope if you can take the 30 minute or so commute, much better schools in Baldwin county.
