moving to mobile - what are the different areas like
we'll be moving to mobile this summer. i'd like to know what is the character of the different neighborhoods in the area. ideally, we'd like to live in a place with a somethat down-townish feel to it. not suburbs. we'd like it to be a safe, reasonably clean and fresh area. any pointers? i will be eternally greatful for any answers and advice thank so very much in advance

There are some nice areas in the older part of town that should fit what you are looking for but you have to know which areas are safe. Not meant to scare you but as in most cities there are good and bad areas. I am sure you will love Mobile, it is a wonderful city

Mobile is a wonderful city. I live in Northern Alabama but I go to Mobile frequently as my son goes to school there. The weather is wonderful there, boasting many glorious sunshine filled days. As others have posted...hurricanes are very likely, but Fairhope is slightly 'safer'. There are several good jobs in the area if you have a good education and the historical homes are absolutely spectacular...as are the trees that fill the older areas of the city--breathtaking.

As Jewlena stated, I too would recommend Fairhope if you are looking for a quaint town. If you don't mind the longer commute if you work in Mobile. A lot of people who live there don't even lock their doors, that is how safe it is. The city is right on Mobile Bay but is on a bluff which protects it from water surge in case their is a hurricane.
Now for the best part about Mobile, it is the seafood. Be sure to try West Indies Salad or the fried crab claws. In Mobile, there is the Dew Drop Inn which is famous for its hot dogs and po-boy sandwiches.
If you are a Jimmy Buffet fan, he has written several songs about Mobile since he was raised there. He does visit but most sightings have him in either Foley or Daphne. Good Luck.. and let us know what you think.

PLEASE please don't give out this type of info people might rely on when you are dead wrong.Or please prove me wrong with "several good" examples.

I'd advise some kind of gated community if you insist on living in city. I've been all around Mobile, and although there are many good people, the bad seems to outweigh them. Just like any other metropolis I guess.

Sounds like Midtown might be perfect for you. Mobile also has several historic districts that I believe you'll find that urban-feeling-vibe you are seeking. Please post back if your move becomes a reality... very interested to hear back comments.
