How bad is the commute from Daphne to Mobile, really?
Hello,
My husband and I are from Phx, Arizona and are accustomed to traffic. Our commutes now range from 30min to 1 hour.
We are moving to Mobile, Al in June so my husband can start his residency at the USA. Everyone so far speaks highly of Daphne, but with my husband's long, arduous hours we fear the long commute?
I have heard different stories from several people.
I would like to know the average commute on a normal workday from Daphne to Mobile (USA Hospital)
Thanks for your help in advance!

depends on the time. During rush hour from Daphne to Mobile to USA Medical should take roughly 45 minutes. Rush hour mornings is normally bad between 6:45-8:30 AM. On the other hand rush hour afternoons is horrendous and the rush hour then would typically be 4-6:30. Going back across the bay from Mobile is a friggen nightmare. You can count on at least one accident each afternoon, which can hold up traffic to a dead stop for over an hour. I kid you not the trip back could take up to an hour and a half.IF he is not on a schedule involving the rush hour then probably 45 minutes is a safe guess.Smart to move across the bay regardless of the traffic mess because Mobile itself is not a good place to live; IMHO.

Well the only good thing about having to cross the bay would be that he would not be confined to just the interstate. He could go on the causeway especially if he sees the traffic backed up. His best route would probably be to go through the bankhead tunnel anyway. So he wouldn't HAVE to get on the interstate. Every time I go across the bayway, everyone is passing me up, probably going 80. So I know it don't always take long. Northernexposure is right. If he isn't going during rush hour it is fine. Even then it might be worth it. (I live in Mobile County) Baldwin county is REALLY NICE but it is growing really fast, too fast for my taste. Baldwin county don't really have the roads to handle the traffic that is being created by the growth. About like Airport Blvd. has become. And the crime rate is growing also. On the news lately all you hear more about is Baldwin county's crime. Not all of Mobile is bad. Its like everywhere else it all depends on what you are looking for.

My husband commutes to Mobile every day form Daphne and has done for 8 years .
He gets from home to airport in 45 mins ,leaving Daphne at 6.45am.USA is much closer.
The key is where to live in Daphne ,getting out of Lake Forrest is BAD .
Best area is Creekside or Sehoy.

You would enjoy living in Spanish Fort/Daphne/Fairhope area. Baldwin schools are much better. I highly recommend the Spanish Fort area, the 3 schools here are excellent, never heard a bad word about them. In Daphne a lot of things have been said about Daphne Elementary South and the high school and probably half the people send their kids to the private schools.
A LOT of people commute from this area to Mobile to USA. Take a trip here and you will see why.

Pick Historic Districts!
I lived in Fairhope (in my mother's vacant home in Rock Creek) for 6 months while my Midtown Mobile house was being renovated and I also lived past the airport in far West Mobile for 8 years. I think that the commute from Fairhope is HORRIBLE! Daphne or Timbercreek would not be bad, but I think in the suburbs people tend to drive into their garages and never come out. My mom lives there in Fairhope now and loves it, but she is 65. It's known as a retirement community. Even when I drive over there to visit her, I just can't stand the traffic which is slow as molasses with too many people driving too slow in the left lane. I know at least 3 families that have moved from there back to Mobile because they didn't like it + didn't realize how terrible the commute would be.
The commute is also a pain in W. Mobile, which is one reason we moved to midtown. When I lived out there, my friends would NOT come visit me-they thought it was too far. I missed out on a lot because people live in certain areas like Midtown or Spring Hill, period.
Not surprisingly, there are a lot of young & old doctor and lawyer families in Midtown, which would include the following historic districts: Old Dauphinway, Leinkauf, Oakleigh Garden District(my 'hood is a hot area), Ashland Place and the downtown districts De Tonti Square, Church St. East. Also in Spring Hill (i.e. Ravine Woods is a hot area), although some complain that they don't deal with their neighbors much.
I really think you would be happiest in Midtown. The homes are close together and people are really, really friendly. We watch out for each other. We go on trips with our neighbors and we are good friends. Our neighborhood has a ton of parties each year. We are not from here, and we have found that Mobilians, even "Old Mobilians" really aren't that cliqueish at all. We know a lot of people, but really only since we moved to Midtown.
As far as the schools, public is doable but it is just easier to put them in private: UMS or St. Pauls or McGill-Toolen.
