Hello newbaby90908,

Let me say I can speak directly to what you are thinking about. I just moved down here from Detroit in July 09. I have been out of work since. I left a lucrative job in Michigan (working for the man that owned the Pistons and recently passed away). I am in IT and moved here to be with family. Mobile is very, very different from Detroit concerning the business world.

Please make sure you have a job before you move here. I moved here on a promise of a new job from a friend of a friend (stupid move on my behalf) that evaporated as I was in transit. I have put in resumes all over town through Dice, Monster, InDeed and have had "0" callbacks.

Downtown Mobile is a nice place to visit and people do live there but to do any real shopping you need to travel to one of the suburbs or go across the bay. I am currently residing in west Mobile and have a wal-mart on every other corner. That is the way I would describe this town, it's a very wal-mart place to live. The newspaper is tiny compared to the Free-press and the job section is a joke.

Go to al.com and look in the Mobile section to see what the classifieds are like. However, if you're looking for blue-collar job then I am sure you will find something. There are lots of postings for pipe-fitters and the such.

I'm not trying to be down on Mobile but compared to metro-detroit area, it seems pretty backwards. Also, take into consideration you will be moving into the bible belt here.

I think the job market is tough all over, I have also been looking in Atlanta, Jacksonville and Tampa. Tampa seems to have a lot of jobs in my field but given the economy I believe the jobs are going to locals first and there are a lot of out-of-work IT'ers everywhere.

I'm not trying to sway your decision of moving to Mobile but I do not want you to make the same mistake I did. Make sure you have a job first. I am lucky in the sense that I am unmarried and have no children. If I was in that situation I would have played things differently, I was just desperate to get out of Michigan, now I feel like I am desperate to get out of Mobile

Also, I have other family in Daphne (Across the bay) and I tend to like that side of the bay more than I like the Mobile side.

Good luck to you.

Good Luck to ya in finding a job in Mobile! I'm an out of towner also! As much as I hate talking bad about these southern states such as the great state of Mississippi and Alabama...they both really don't like out of state people!! No joke! I've been here now for over months and still NO job! I couldn't even get a simple delivery job other than Dominoes! They say it takes about 6 months to get into the groove of things down here. Well enough of that! Good luck and welcome!

@ EDIGUY - Thanks so much. You answered my concerns precisely. I don't want to rush from one bad situation to another. I have a pretty decent good job here in Michigan, but seems to be a little shaky right now.

Thanks again

I don't want to come off as a downer but the situation is not good for IT workers here... at least not at the moment.

Good luck to you and hope you find what you are looking for, in the meantime, stay warm up there and if I can be of assistance, let me know.

Best regards!

That'd be just about anywhere though when it comes to IT, but OP, you'd probably have more succcess in Huntsville with IT work than Mobile.

EDI guy,

Do not buy any property or anything else that could trap you here. I tried to move to Texas in 2007 and it is great there.Had to move so wife could get a job .I could not sell assets here therefore I could not get my life started there .Brought the wifes job back here and is now working the Texas job from here. Soon as the economy picks and if I can ever sell some property I'm back to Austin in a flash .I have no other reason to be here. BTW I am a life time resident of ole mobile. But if a trip to wal mart is THE highlight of your day this is your place. If you are in IT try Dallas or Austin .The latter is the "silicon valley of the south."

Your assessment of Mobile is spot on .Everyone should read before considering this place.

I hate to be a backseat driver (as I typically am on C-D), but I think it's safe to say that if Mobile really wants to advance - it needs to attract a few large companies that would hire numerous college grads in fields besides health and education (IT, Middle Managment, etc.). Of course, advancement is always a "good thing" or "bad thing" by the eye of the beholder.
