Default Thinking about moving to Mobile

I'm pretty young, 19, living in Miami, FL.

I'm very heavily leaning towards moving to Mobile in a few months, and transfer schools, to USA.

I want to visit maybe later this year, but we'll see.

I know its a whole different atmosphere, but thats what i'm looking for.

I really wanted to move somewhere around the Biloxi/Gulfport area, but there are no major schools for me to transfer to, and Mobile seems like a better choice.

I'm really looking for something totally different. Much calmer. Less people. Less traffic. Less hecticness(word?). But a somewhat social city, and like USA is a major univ., i would guess its a little social.

Does it look like Mobile will be a fit? Hows the traffic? (mostly to the beach, and to Biloxi) The beach & weather? how 'bout the school?

Personally, i'm pretty simple...i like politics..beach..music..sports..and going out here and there. Do love the fact that New Orleans, Biloxi, and the Panhandle aren't too far out. (I love driving far, just not in traffic)

Sounds good for me? I'm def. leaving Miami. Don't like it at all here. The gulf is my most likely destination. I'm just wondering if I should maybe go up to Hattisburg or Pensacola to go to School?

thanks

I think Mobile would fit what your looking for, Pensacola would be cool too. Come and check out both areas and I'm sure you won't be dissappointed. Some of the other regulars on this board will probably clue you in on more specific info on Mobile. Good luck.

I believe you will fit in very well in Mobile. The University of South Alabama is a good school it is one of the fastest growing schools in the nation right now. The problem with USA is parking and housing because the campus enrollment has outgrown campus development which is a good thing but yet bad also. Biloxi is only 30 to 40 min from Mobile and the beaches are atleast 3o min away depending on which beach you are going to.

USA is a great school. And from the sound of it, you would like Mobile, Pensacola, or Hattiesburg. For universities, I'd recommend USA or University of Southern Mississippi. Mobile will have a bit more to do than Hattiesburg, but Hattiesburg would be a shorter drive to Gulfport/Biloxi (although it's not exactly a daunting drive from Mobile).

Also look into University of West Florida (UWF) in Pensacola if you like being closer to the beach.

The first school I looked into was Southern Miss., but I don't like the idea of living in Hattisburg too much. I was thinkin' about the Gulf Coast campus in Long Beach, but thats a pretty small and unsocial place from what I've seen.

UWF I've thought about. For some reason I never liked the idea of staying in Florida much, even if its 15 hours away. I like the idea of living close to Pensacola though.

How far is USA to the nearest beach in Mobile?

There is no beach in Mobile, you'll need to drive to Gulf Shores which is about 50-60 minutes depending on traffic. The only water in Mobile is the bay which is brown and muddy, not somewhere you would want to swim.

Dauphin Island would be the closest beach to USA. I would recommend Perdido Key (SW of Pensacola) for a beach day. It's always been one of my favorite beaches -- plus Lillian's is there.
