We will be visiting your state in January. We have never been to Alabama (we are from South Dakota) and will be visiting Gulf Shores. Any suggestions on great things to do and see would be appreciated. Also my husband wants to crab fish from the pier, any suggestions on that? Do we need to bring our winter gear?

You'll need pants and a light jacket, it's pretty cool here in January, even on the beach.

Go to Fairhope for a day. Fairhope's downtown is unique in that has many shops. Good places to eat would be Mikee's in downtown Gulf Shores and Lillian's in Perdido Key.

Fort Morgan is a beautiful place to visit. Site of the Battle of Mobile Bay (along with Fort Gaines on Dauphin Island)

If you have enough time, drive down Government Street in Mobile (under the live oaks) and see all of the huge historical homes.

If you are on the river side and want to fish from the pier, go ahead, but you will probably only catch pinfish and croakers, so don't be dissapointed. For crabs, just set a crab trap with something like turkey necks or chicken "parts" or chopped up fish.

If you are on the beach side, you can surf fish, or better yet get a charter and go deep sea fishing if you want some real angling action.

Also, if you all have the time, you may want to check out Fairhope and Mobile.

Thanks for the great info, we have emailed the A-Team about a fishing trip and also read the article on crabbing, again, thanks! The pier looks great also.

The pier in Gulf Shores was damaged by Hurricane Ida, hopefully it will be repaired and totally open when you get here.

If you are going to be there a month.. be sure to go to Lamberts (home of the throwed roll) in Foley and LuLu's (Jimmy Buffet's sister). Take a ride to Magnolia springs.. a beautiful little town where they deliver mail by boat. There is also a great restaurant called Big Daddy's off of Fish River or Wolf Lodge for good seafood. Be sure to try West Indies salad while you are there. Crab meat marinated in oil vinegar with onions. Great seafood!!!!

Do go to Mobile and Fairhope. Fairhope has a nice pier and has a quaint shopping area. Mobile has the beautiful historical homes.

IIRC finding crabs during the winter months is harder because of the cold weather. They are blue crabs in Mobile. We always used just chicken necks on a string and a net!!

If you want to go on a charter let me know, my buddy does them 2-5 people, his price will be less than the ones out of Orange Beach. Plus I'll be your mate for the day and we will catch fish. Let me know when you're ready
