My son works for Market Street in McKinney, and when he lived in San Antonio he worked for HEB. He has mentioned Central Market but I've not been there. He actually shops at Costco, his store, and Wal Mart...depending....The smart way is to shop specials, and watch prices. Publix is considered expensive and many don't go there, but that's not so. They have great sales and better quality on the meats. The bakery is better than any other supermarket.

The Eastern Shore has a Sams in Malbis area, so I doubt there is room for Costco....They need a larger number of residents to be able to compete. Hope they open somewhere in Mobile...we'll all drive there for sure.

So true, I drive from Loxley to Fairhope Publix, and like has been said if ya slow down and shop wisely you can get some great deals. You won't find a better Deli/ Bakery in any other grocery store. The only thing I don't really like is their meat dept. I prefer Cains or Farm Fresh Meats in Robertsdale, they have some of the best hot dogs and sausage I've ever had and being a native New Yorker I'm picky about my dogs, franks whatever.

I lived in San Antonio before, and we absolutely love HEB. It has fresh produce at a good price, stuff to entertain kids, even cafeterias at certain stores (selling Chinese!). The specials are generous. In fact, I never needed to drive all the way to Sam's club or costco (my husband joined both). I miss HEB.
Yes, Central Market is good for strolling! But the stuff is way to expensive to buy on a daily basis. The coffee is good though.
But I guess it is not fair to compare HEB in Texas to anything here in Alabama, the costs structures are probably very different.
