I remember, what was it, "Woolworths" in Bel Air Mall? Whatever it was, it was a drug store with an attached mini-resaraunt. My grandmother used to take us there to get milkshakes when little kids. I think there is currently a "Forever 21" there now lol. Have to love evolution and the passage of time .
"Woolworths"...My Father-in-law was the store manager there back in 1978. You had a designated smoking area for studentsat murphy high in 1976.Santas rocket sleigh at springdale PLAZA .Morrisons at one end and raphaels at the other. There was no Montgomery Ward yet but was Delaney park where I played little league baseball in 1972 across the ditch from westlawn elementry.Played for Thoss Sporting Goods. and johnson chevorlet. That was next to the Royal Knight which is still kicking. Now the mini mall(Bel Aire Mall )had a leather shop where among other things you could get a leather braclet made with your name on it and exchange it with your girlfriend circa 1977. There was also big candle shop and an icee shop there. Spencer gifts might still be there. There was a big alladins castle beside mc donalds. I helped build the festival center when I was in college /construction and helped open the applebees on airport blvd.Any one remember New York Pizza that Phil and Zonk owned next to the dollar movie? Anyone remember the skating rink at the loop? There's an antique store there now. the colonel dixie is still at pleasant valley and hyw 90 still serving dixie dogs. The teen night club down the street from colonel dixie was a cafeteria style restaraunt Anyone remember the name?
Austins country palace is now closed for better or worse. The bargain bazar. Capri Theater at airport and bel aire. Ozzies bbq was where wendys is now.
Help me here. Was there a restaurant CALLED THE pUB THAT TURNED INTO THE jOLLY oX tHEN MUCH LATER TO HOOTERS BEFORE HOOTERS MOVED LAST YEAR?Early 70's. It was next to the old montgomery ward tire center.

Lums's was next to Mongomery Wards and they had the best clam strips.
The skating rink at the Loop was in the old Azalea theater and I think they called it the Azalea. I think it was owned by Billy Bolton, the guy that does the Pecan Festival.
Shakey pizza parlor had pitchers of beer and men in stripped coats playing the banjo and piano.
Does anyone remember Bellas Hess [sp?] large store on the corner of
Airport and Mcgregor. Your groceries came out on a conveyor belt.
What about the green stamp office that used to be on airport blvd. next to the doctor/dentist office there close to McGregor. Or the state liquor store on airport...or The Max or the Bombay Bicycle Club on airport. What about Twikingham Station???? Or Adams????
Wow it`s funny how this thread bring all of the Mobile forumers out of the woodwork , lol.... I`m too young and new to the city to realy remember anything. I rember the dollar movie and there use to be a Kogers in the festival center I believe. I remember Dauphin street theaters and the food court in Bel Air. I remeber the A & W hot dog place in Springdale I have memories of Camelot Music store in springdale as well. I miss Woolwerth`s and the pet store that was in Bel Air. I remember Peach Mmusic store on Air port Blvd and I wonder what happen to AL`s hot dogs that use to be downtown on Dauphin across the street from Bienville square ?
I have seen how areas of downtown Mobile such as Royal street go through a complete transition.

The max was owned by a Ms. Drane who also owned Chuckie Cheese in 1979. Bombay is now O'Charlies. Twikingham Station = bumpers billiards.
Top Clubs in 1983.Trinities down town .Will and the Bushmen. Saw a band called Baghdad there that rocked . They were a van halen tribute type group. There was no LoDa then. Wild Wild West that used to be a movie theatre. How about the club that had the tree in the middle of the dance floor a western place two step and all.. Later was Studebakers then Mustang Sallies Then Senior Frogs now demolished. I saw M C Hammer and Evander Holifeild there one night. Seriously. Adams in the ramada was laways fun. .Monte Carlo Club anyone? Use to have the Sexy silhouette contest!!!
There are those of us who disagree and I usually side with the "Mobile is still a good city" side of the argument ... but this thread always makes me reminisce and think to a certain extent "what the hell happened since the glory days?" Think of how great a city Mobile could be if it somehow had a second renaissance.

I saw Elvis at the State fair in the late 50s. I got a dog from that pet store back in the 60s. She was the best dog.
We use to go skating at the rink off of DPI. We always went to the Loop on Sat to the movies. Remember when you had to go to the causeway to get a beer on Sunday with dinner?
I agree Oscotto.. When I go back to some of the old haunts I wonder what happened? Even downtown seemed so seedy even with all the new lofts going in there.
Are they still painting the cannon on Gov't street?
