What would be faster, going through I-90 W then down to Highway 191S down to West Yellowstone (basically outskirts of the Park). Then eventually going down though Highway 20S...

or

Taking I-90 W then I-15 S ?

**On Mapquest it automatically tells me to go through Highway 191 S to eventually get to SLC. But I know theres alot of speed limits and small towns to pass, so would it be practical to just go around and stick to the main Interstates?

I would take I-90 West to Whitehall then Highway 55/41 to Dillon. Catch I-15 at Dillon then a straight shot to SLC. By taking the cutoff at Whitehall you miss going over the Continental Divide twice.

Having gone both ways... it's quite a lot faster, and a MUCH better road if it snows, to go over to Whitehall and then down to Dillon, rather than going via West Yellowstone. Yeah, down to the park is shorter but even on dry pavement it's a good hour or more slower.

Your mileage may vary

Come on now, I got that from an old guy that run a wagon from here to Skagway Alaska. He spit out a tooth with his snoose juice and said, "By golly, that's the easiest route I've figured out with the team. Jane knows best and I consulted her. She's the lead on this team.

Been consulting a horse's ass again, eh? And pick up that tooth. Didn't you see the "No Littering" sign??

Serious-like, I been both ways in good weather and bad. Hwy 191 is fine if you're bein' a tourist or are in no hurry, but it's an hour longer in good weather and a good FOUR hours longer if the road goes bad (and I made the noxious discover that you can't buy gas after 10pm south of the park). I ain't never takin' that park-way road north-south again unless the object is to lollygag along.

Thanks for all the input guys. Yea we took that long road (west Yellowstone) last year when we visited. We had such a bad experience because of all the road work and bad weather at the time.
This time I thought we 'd try something different, and get some local advice

Ah. Well, in that case..... Elk's advice is to get a team and a wagon and take the dirt trails through central Wyoming. Rez's advice is to make those lazy folks in SLC drive to Billings.
