For those of you who haven't heard it locally or on national news, a tornado hit Billings at about 4:30ish this afternoon, destroying MetraPark Arena, the large event center in town, as well as many businesses. Thank God no homes were hit and from first reports there were no injuries or deaths. You can go to the web and look up Billings tv stations, KULR8 or KTVQ as well as look on The Billings Gazette's website for lots of photos, video and info. What a shock to Billings.

Default Tornado

I saw this on my Facebook this morning (I get the updates from the KTVQ page). Looks like it threw the arena roof about like it was made of matchwood. Thankfully nobody was hurt (Despite the reports of quarter sized hail stones).

Are tornadoes a regular occurence in Billings?

Tornadoes are very rare in Billings. The last one reported according to the news stations was in 1958.

Yep, it was an exciting evening, what with the tornado, and flash flood warnings, and flooded streets, and hail...
It seems like we have had a lot more, and more severe, thunderstorms this year.
But, perhaps it is just an old man's memory playing tricks!

Right after the tornado, I posted video of it in the Summer Weather Alerts thread. I also added it to Let's Visit, if you want to check there.
