I like the whole idea of reviving the "circuit culture" of the old west -- whether that's the preacher, the opera, the rodeo, or whatever -- I think it's a great way to keep these little backbeyond towns in touch with one another and to keep the small-town heritage alive, while bringing in various stuff that maybe the town can't afford or can't support full-time, but would sure like to have at least once in a while. I'm not a churchgoer either, but I know a lot of people feel the need and appreciate both the guidance and the chance to bond with their neighbours (the nearest of which might be half an hour away).

As a circuit rider you wouldn't even need to have a church per se -- anyone's home or barn or park or town square would do just as well, depending on how many people are in the area, and come to think of it that might feel real down-home to the local folks, making it easier to accept a stranger as the pastor (Montana folks often feel quite attached to their local pastor!)

In recent years, each summer two Hassidic rabbinic students travel the entire state visiting with isolated Jewish families, scattered in small towns all over Montana.

Now a rabbi, then a Hassidic rabbinic student, Chaim Bruk rode the same circuit around Montana for a few summers before being ordained, getting married and putting down roots in Bozeman, where he has built a shul (Jewish house of worship).

Now that's cool too. Another benefit -- the preacher or rabbi or student really gets to know the territory, and the people in and around wherever he finally settles. I expect that makes for an exceptionally good relationship.

The minister at the church I attended during my youth oversaw two different churches, so it might take some effort. I suppose it depends if one is already a retired pastor or looking to retire soon, and if so, they are okay with a smaller congregation.
