Well, there's one thing you'll learn about Missoula....
Most of those guys over there had no idea "why" they were up in arms.....
I'll wager that there were only 10 people there that really knew what was going on, and these 10 people never uttered a word...... the rest just made noise for the sake of making it, that's all.
This is how Missoula is.... and has been for a good many years.
They just aren't the sharpest tools in the shed sometimes... er....ruther.... most of the time.

Missoula is not your best bet, BUT...

If Missolusa doesn't fit my description, could you please make some suggestions?
Thanks for your help.

I'd suggest a town outside of Missoula, but still close enough that you can enjoy the amenities. My recommendation is Lolo, about 10-15 minutes south of Missoula. It's VERY family-oriented, very low crime, nice and quiet, and the sky goes on forever.
I am actually farther south than Lolo (in Stevensville, about 40 minutes south of Missoula), and I like it out here. It's much more peaceful than the city itself.
You mentioned that you don't want a place that is being taken over by developers... Missoula is definitely falling victim to excessive development, especially on North Reserve St. There is always construction somewhere, and in the last five or so years, we've gotten a Super Wal-Mart, Lowe's, Ross, TJ Maxx, Furniture Row, Linens 'N' Things, Coldstone Creamery, Famous Footwear, etc. All this on North Reserve. Ick.
Lolo is starting to see some of the development creeping outside the Missoula limits, but for the most part, it's fine. Another alternative is Florence, about 25 minutes from Missoula. Virtually no new development: it looks like Lolo, but is not as close to Missoula. You could definitely find the open land, skies, and stars that you're looking for.

Haha, yeah, I'm starting to get that feeling...
I still like it here. Even though the ignorant element is starting to get annoying.
You're probably right about the 10 people observation... some of my anti-Arab friends were SYMPATHIZING with this guy until they heard the real story. Then they turned back into themselves.
Bigotry makes me laugh; both sides of it. It's amazing how people can delude themselves to that point.

What continues to amaze me is how people who are visitors here act, I'm talking about tourists, college kids, people passing through etc. The things they say and do are beyond belief.
One lady walked into a gas station/store near bigfork and yelled 20 on 2! The cashier as one would guess said "what" and she snapped 20 on 2. Now in other states you have to pay first so she just assumed that was how it was here and got snippy. She then went on to ask "where are the bathrooms?" and was told "go out that door and turn left" to which she responded "do I have to use an outhouse, I am not using an outhouse!" She was told no, they are just in back of the building. Her husband then walked up and grabbed a bottle of Moose Drool and actually asked "what's in this?" to which he was told "beer" (not what I would have told him) and they stalked out......
I just don't get why people think they can check their civility, common sense and morals at our border and act in a way they would NEVER act at home.

wow. I think I would have hit them both over the head with a bottle of Moose Drool and gone, "It's on the house. Now go home before I hit you with something that hurts worse."
Tourists are never rude here, we just don't like them... they come up and go, "How long does it take for deer to grow up and turn into elk?"
