Hi All,

EH, you area a saint! I'm so sorry that the man was in a hurry, but you are a saint!

Just got back from being in CA. for close to 2 weeks......buried our best friend......and his wife sold the house, so we moved her....everything at once.... We got pretty sick and are still coughing......grrrr.

Warm wishes to you for your new house, 7!

Forgot who wanted to know about lodging in Missoula.......we have stayed at Holiday Inn twice....it's not that far from UM...no continental breakfast.... HOWEVER, we have stayed on the edge of town 2-3 times...Days Inn...reasonably priced..I think husband buys it through priceline....it's on the road that goes to Flathead, but not that far off the main highway that goes through Missoula, (sorry, can't think of the number).....decent continental breakfast......they take animals......good place for truckers, (huge back lot), but the windows are doubled so you don't hear them warming up....very kind staff.....

My husband and girl have stayed at the Days Inn in town, too....it's also fairly close to UM.

SO I noticed this thing going on for permits for "floating", on rivers in Montana. At first, I was..."huh?"

Just to show the slight differences in language, floating there means exactly what it says, floating, on water. It took me a minute to figure out that it,(Permits) or are for boating, or boats on the water, such as canoes, rafts, and so on, lol. We in PA just call it a boating license.

Made me feel a little silly. Its the small things like this that will require getting used to. "Floating"....of course? I love the simplicity of it.

..................well,.......not quite

All water craft (boats, canoes, rafts etc) are required to be licensed......................

Certain Rivers and certain sections of rivers are so popular that in order to preserve the "quality" of that stretch of water, and to protect it from the effects of "over-usage".................the prospective "floater" has to apply for a permit. when a certain number is reached...........that's it............no more "floaters" will be allowed...........always more applicants than there are permits..................just like drawin' "to-an-inside-straight".

F&G Dept folks monitor this quite closely.

The Smith River in MT is a stretch of river that needs to be experienced at least once in a lifetime. It is one of the most pristine rivers. It needs a permit to "float" down. It can be quite treacherous in the spring and has taken lives. It must be respected. Google it and check out some pics

Last time I went floating, it was Yellowstone river, in July. I expected it to be like the Colorado River...wrong! That water is COLD! I mean, REALLY COLD!!!!

Note: Float trips in Montana, even in summer, require extreme cold weather gear, wetsuits...Goretex, coats, gloves, booties...INMO!!! This is NOT like floating the Grand Canyon in the summer.

Oh.....makes sense however, snow is...cold, when it melts it would still be cold.

Smith river I hear is awesome.

I enjoy taking the SOT kayak out on Hauser and Holter lakes. I've got it rigged for fishing, which is really nice.

Lazy day on the lake enjoying the birds and catching fish

The Flathead River downstream of Flathead Lake and Kerr Dam offers a good float that is not so cold. After all, it has taken that water many months to move through the 25 or so miles of the largest freshwater lake in the US (West of the Mississippi River, that is), during which time it has "warmed up" by a few degrees...

This outfit, The Flathead Raft Company of Polson, has a package deal for a day trip (or shorter) that is pretty reasonable.
