Somebody shut off the wind, I've had enough.

Where I live, we seldom get wind, but we've had strong winds for about a week now at all hours of the day. "No light trailers" alerts solid for the last 24 hours. I can take just about any kind of Weather and enjoy it, but constant wind sucks!

I know there's a switch to shut it off, somewhere. We just have to find it.

LOL!!
Try living in Big Twig or Livingstoned for a while! My parents have had winds of 50+ for most of the winter, and sometimes it really blows You know what they say about the wind in Big Timber, if it ever stopped, everybody would fall over.

I-90 across Harvets Flats has been closed several times in the past month. Been getting pretty breezy in Helena too, and it isn't even legislature!

It's just springtime in the Rockies

Don't worry, this too shall pass

I'm thinking the weather be a changing.

When I got up at 5:30, it was 54 F. Now, at 9:30, it's 34 F and blowing like hell. Clouding up pretty good. Our snow had finally melted off so my report to NOAA this morning, was zero, on the ground. I'm thinking that's going to change today.

But hey, it's February, what should we suspect?

Have any of you ever visited the Smithsonian Museum? I did a project out in DC at the Pentagon, but never made it over there. I did, however, visit the wall and the rest of museums and I spent some time in Arlington.

However, a friend sent me this link and I thought maybe some of you would like to take a virtual tour of the Smithsonian. You'll figure it out. Full 360 camera, can turn around, advance forward or backward, visit different floors, go into any of the rooms. I only looked at it for about 30 minutes, but I can see where I will spend a lot of hours on this link.

Enjoy:

Been there many times. One of the few nice things about living near the madhouse is being able to hop on a subway and spend the entire day in one or two museums. My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I would spend all day at the Smithsonian, or Air and Space, Hirschhorn etc..

There's not much I miss about once living inside the Beltway, but that is certainly one of them.

I know. I had to run into town yesterday, after I posted this. Had to go to the VA and get a meter checked. While there, I killed the battery in my smart phone playing with that link.

I found out some very interesting information yesterday that totally changed my way of thinking. Deals with ballistics of guns. Everybody has their ideas of what to use for home defense and you hear about those ideas. Such as:

I use a pistol because it won't penetrate and go through a neighbors house.

I use a shotgun because it won't penetrate and hurt somebody in another room.

The fact is, using sheetrock and ballistic gel, and testing the following:

9mm Pistol, 147 g Jacketed Hollow Point
.45 cal Pistol, 230 g Jacketed Hollow Point
.223/5.56 AR-15, 62 g Full Metal Jacket
12 ga Shotgun with 00 buck
.308 rifle, 155 g AMAX

What do you think penetrated the best when fired through a layer of sheetrock and then into ballistic gel? Just put them in order for which one penetrated the furthest down to which one came up shortest.

Just off the top of my head without looking it up, I would go with shotgun w/ 00 buck as it is the lowest velocity, and in tests with liquids, lower velocity rounds usually penetrate farther as they don't create the resistance in a liquid that a higher velocity round does.

Think of belly flopping into a pool from the side of the pool vs belly flopping off a high dive.

Interesting analogy. I'll wait and see if there are some more people answer.

Remember, this is through sheetrock and into ballistic gel.

I don't really know, but I'll make a wild-assed guess, from most penetration to least:

12 ga Shotgun with 00 buck
.308 rifle, 155 g AMAX
.223/5.56 AR-15, 62 g Full Metal Jacket
.45 cal Pistol, 230 g Jacketed Hollow Point
9mm Pistol, 147 g Jacketed Hollow Point

Somewhat based on info from a YouTube video which you can find named:

9mm vs .45 vs Rifle A Dr's View of Gunshot Wounds (graphic photos)

in which a perp gets shot point-blank in the chest and shoulder 2 or 3 times with a .9mm pistol and doesn't even flinch. Per the data presented in the video, basically the real factor is how much powder it has behind it, and compared to rifles, pistols are a waste of gunpowder (if I recall correctly, about 1/6th as lethal on average).

And I remember one sheriff's dept. used 12ga shotguns with slug loads... and their method of halting a car chase was to shoot the engine block. Lets all the steam outta the getaway car.

Cars run on steam. When it gets out, they stop working.

But far as defense is concerned... in my view it goes like this: ANY weapon that makes the perp backpedal is a good weapon.... including my scary attitude when I get woke up in the middle of the night.
