Sounds to me like what you're short on is actually calories, not protein. It takes a minimum of several weeks, actually more like several months, for protein deficiency to become a real issue, but dragging from calorie deficiency will show up in a matter of hours. The obvious solution is sugar, but if you're diabetic that's a problem.

What is the protein shake based on? if it's milk and egg proteins, all good, but if it's soy (aka "hydrolyzed vegetable protein"), that can be worse than nothing.

Whey protein. I have about six different flavors. Two I get from GNC and the others I pick up at Wally World.

Ah, so it's the good stuff. Have you tried mixing an egg yolk with it? (Mmm, raw egg yolk. Or, why I usually have to put an extra egg in stuff.)

Very sorry to hear this. Wondering if liquid vitamins would help since they are absorbed quickly. Also sub-lingual vitamin B12.
Hard to keep still and not start ranting about VA hospitals here, but why would they do this knowing it would cause severe malnutrition with no known remedy. I'm getting angry.
Well, must go take care of Dufus now, please take care and look out for yourself. Look stuff up online. Try a Breville juicer. Try anything that makes sense. Fight, dammit!

Even at that, I have to drink a protein shake (60 grams of protein) every day. The protein shake is chocked full of other nutrients and vitamins. Even with that, I come up short on things like sodium, magnesium, iron, etc. So the VA had me come in for blood work, twice so that they could concoct some sort of witches brew of the things I am shy on. Its a liquid, but they've been working in it for ten days and haven't got it ready yet. I assume they had to order something in, I dunno. We'll see when it gets here.

The protein shakes are so important that if I skip it, by 6pm I am dragging.

I have a standing phone appointment with a dietition, every Wednesday at 9, she calls me, right on schedule, never a minute late.
I came up with my own solution Elk, I live on Ice Cream/Frozen Yogurt! As I let you know via PM I can relate to your condition and found Ice Cream and to a lesser extent pudding is the one thing I can eat a bunch of and if you get the decent stuff you get a good amount of protein and calcium out of it not to mention it's tasty too!

Ice cream is a good thought. The good stuff that's basically just frozen milk/cream and sugar (no gums) is actually quite nutritious. As I say above, with the falling-apart-by-6pm thing, the problem isn't lack of protein, it's lack of calories.

Believe it or not the best ice cream I've tasted in decades is the cheap bulk stuff at Sam's Club... ah, hell, can't think of the brand name but it starts with an S. (And it's basically just milk, cream, sugar, and vanilla.) When it melts, it's just rich milk, not goo. Refreeze it, and it's ice cream again. No frothy or gooey stage. Not too sweet, not too greasy. Just right.

I take a liquid multivitamin. Also, I was taking a 81 grain aspirin every night at bedtime, they changed it to a 81 grain chewable vitamin/

Well the pharmacy finally contacted me about the magnesium shortage. Their answer? Instead of ONE 400 mg magnesium tablet each day, as of now I am taking NINE tablets a day, but only for a week and then I go back in for blood work. They want to see what effect its going to have and then make adjustments again.

That's a lot of magnesium! At this rate you're gonna start having trouble with metal detectors.

Funny you mention this, when I went in for my last stent they said I was low on magnesium. I wonder why that is?
Maybe it's time for me to go chew on a car rim?

Been thinking about the turkeys that wander through here every day.

There is about 15 of them. Do you think if I throw a handful of chicken feed out each morning, that after 30 days I could call them 'domesticated, free range turkeys' and cook one up for Thanksgiving? haha. If not, I guess I'll have to get a tag and shoot one with my bow.
