The problem with Ham Radio or other types of comma is it would only fix part of the problem. My cell phone is a hot spot and has 8 WiFi signals, so my internet is through my cell phone I am in the middle of fixing that and hit a road block. Because I fell a while back and couldn't get up, I've been checking in to medical alert pendants.

Most of them are a box that installs on your land line and are only good for about 100 feet from the box.

I found one that is much better. I called them and we worked out a package deal:
Old style cell phone $59. it has a GPS built in. Hit the med alert button and a med tech comes on to help. You can have 5 people programmed in so tell the med tech, I've fallen down, contact Mike. She will call and get Mike on the line and tell him what is going on. She will stay on the line until the situation is resolved. Maybe Miles will get to me and determine I need an ambulance. Say I need an ambulance, she already has my location from the GPS. She also calls any of the 5 that you have listed as notify. So she would call my daughter and let her know that I fell and am being taken to Memorial by ambulance.

That service, along with 1200 minutes of anywhere talk, and unlimited text messages, is a total of $43. per month. VERY inexpensive.

Trouble is, they use Verizon and Verizon has NO signal at my cabin. Nearest tower is 14 mile away.

Thinking I was going with them, I also looked into getting my internet through my satellite dish. If I would have switched to that phone and dish internet, I would save over $100 a month off what I currently pay.

......Hey Elk.............

I sure would appreciate it, if you would send me (either PM or in this thread) all the info related to what you have described in your above quoted post.
I use Verzion for my Lap Top and Smart Phone, the signal comes from a tower two miles away.

I get internet for the Lap Top and the Smart Phone through (a little thing called a "Jet Pack") it picks up the signal.
I also get my TV signal through Dish Network, that I got through the Verzion people also.
And thirdly, I get my "phone service" through Verzion......(not a regular Land Line")....a little black Plastic Pedstal type thing sits next to my main phone in the kitchen and it also picks up "a signal" from this same tower for my phone service. So my "former Land Line Connection" is in-operative, but I still have the same phone number I've had for 35 years!!

I like the idea (as you mentioned) of the "old style cell phone" the GPS thingy, and the Med Alert Service etc.

So again could you please give me the info I need to contact the folks you spoke with.............I'm very interested.

Thank you.

Happy to. go to the like at the end to learn all about it, but you have to call and talk to a rep for them to whip up a package deal on features. The actual phone without med features is $14.99 a month, but you'll want the med features and that's another $14.99 or so. Something I forgot to mention is it includes medical questions. Hit a button and have a doctor/nurse to ask about aches and pains or meds, etc. I couldn't find anything wrong with them except I can't get Verizon signal. I used to have Verizon and about 4 years ago, about the time AT&T had the big buy out of Altel, Verizon lost the lease they had on the local tower, leaving us with that tower 14 miles away. off it wasn't for that, I was perfectly happy with them.

Elk, there are cell phone boosters that we used in a motorhome that actually work pretty darn good and might just get you some signal.
The other idea that people around me have done is to call Verizon and have a talk with customer service, explain your issue, the fact that you "should" be getting signal and "request" a fix. Out here they've come out and installed a repeater/booster for free in several homes.
I suggested Ham radio as a back up/hobby/emergency relay you might enjoy.

jimj, I fought with Verizon for almost 2 years. They even sent reps to my cabin with equipment to measure signal, they swore it was my equipment being old and sold me new equipment. No good. The booster they sell for $300 only enhances at your house and doesn't help a bit once you get Moore than 100 ft from the equipment, so if I go outside to feed thee chickens and horses, I have no signal? What good is that? Oh, and they can't guarantee it to help. First you buy it, and then you see if it works. No thanks. They wouldn't bring one out and test it. Verizon is not THAT good.

Buy the phone and basic service is only $14.99 a month, but they only include 50 minutes and no medical capability. They have several plans for mor minutes, like 300, 600, etc. If you go all out and want 1200 minutes, its only another $14.99 per month.

The website does not do a very good job of explaining bundles or plans. So I wrote down some questions and gave them a call. Very friendly, English as primary language, and helpful staff. He answered all of my questions to my satisfaction and then asked me, just exactly what do you want for service? I told him to max talk and text, and gibe me full medical use. and GPS.. He put together a plan that was exactly what I wanted, nothing more, nothing less and said the plan would be $43. per month.

The fact that it is a medical alert pendant, cell phone with GPS, just can't be beat. A person could bee halfway to town and have a stroke and not be able to talk. Push thee button and when they answer they already have your location and will dispatch medical assistance immediately.

I wish they would allow it here. Because it is considered low signal area, they won't even sign me up. I'm thinking about seeing if I can get one anyhow and have it for when I head to town.. Good signal a mile out of. town. If I did that as an emergence phone, I could leave it at minimum minutes, no text, and full medical and probably get it for around $20 a month. Pretty cheap insurance when you are in questionable health.

Speaking of questionable health, I just went to refill my coffee and got a head rush when I stood up, so I checked my blood pressure. 77/59. oh oh.
