I thought this was important enough to have it's own thread with so many folks asking about the state.

Unemployment rate at 16.1 percent in county - TheWesternNews.com: Local/State News - Unemployment rate at 16.1 percent in county: Local/State News

I heard once that unemployment is measured by the # of people receiving unemployment insurance, not counting those who weren't eligible or who have exhausted their benefits. Any truth to that?

Think about this. How can they count those people that don't or can't apply?

They talley those that are registered and seeking work. Those that are drawing unemployment.

If they did it any other way, they'd be counting stay at home mom's and retired folks.

ElkHunter is right. As far as the statistics (aka computer) are concerned, once your unemployment benefits run out, you either died, moved out of the country, or found a job.

16.1% unemployment. Pretty sobering stat.

We should take into account that there is little industry in that area, mines are shut down, logging (like Oregon) has been enviromented to death. But wow that is a staggering number.

That is pretty rough, but from my take on the article it's 16.1% in Lincoln County.... Not sure what the number is Statewide.

Here it says 7.2 for the state in November 2010
Local Area Unemployment Statistics Home Page

Now I wonder how the effect of seasonal farm labor affects that number. Going back 10 years on that site it seems rather steady.

Also construction. I have a neighbor who works in the construction industry and works every Spring-Fall so they can earn enough time to get unemployment all winter. Every year. What a racket! I'm sure others do the same thing.
