Can anyone please tell me if major highway 90 EAST from Spokane, WA to Billings, MT is passably driveable @ this time of year if one is cautious, of course. Will be driving a Toyota Scion, heavily loaded! Music and dog aboard. How is it thru them thar beautiful winter Rockies? Clear roads? Leaving Valentines Day. Thanks for your help.... ingrid

Keep in mind that road conditions can change significantly daily. "This time of year" is a difficult question! Keep checking the map and Montana road report!

If you look at the top of the Forum, there is a Sticky thread for weather alerts. The very first post is all of the highway cams. Check them during daylight hours as you won't see much at night.

The list is lengthy as it's South Dakota, Wyoming, Montana, etc. Just scroll down to what you want to see.

Mapquest says: Dallas--Amarillo--Lamar--Denver--Cheyenne--Salt Lake City--Boise--Pendleton--Ellensburg--Seattle. 32 hours.
You'll be bypassing Montana completely. But if you want to minimize winter driving, go from Amarillo on I-40 (old Route 66) through Albuquerque, Flagstaff, Kingman, Bakersfield, Sacramento, and up I-5 all the way to Seattle. Getting around Mt. Shasta may be the only winter driving you'll have to do.
If you want to go through Montana, that's a different story! Was that the point of your question?

My son did a road trip just about this time last winter, to Yellowstone, with a couple of friends. The entire Rocky Mountain area was an adventure, they were in a Grand Cherokee and barely made it with 4 wheel drive. I'd look at the 5-day forecast for all areas on the way and then decide on a route, checking again from Starbucks or your motels along the way for updates.

You will always want to check the weather before you leave. The mountain passes east of Spokane along the Idaho/Montana border can get pretty scary. I have also run into some bad weather around Bozeman, especially around Livingston and Big Timber with the wind.
