I live in Pittsburgh, PA. I have been thinking about moving to Butte for a few years. I just can't get the city out of my head. I love the history, the affordable homes, the old west sense of place and identity of the town. The only thing that worries me is that it might be difficult to find a job there. I'm a bachelor-degree level social worker. Does anyone know where to look for jobs in the human services field in Butte? Is the town as cool, gritty, historic, and eccentric as it seems to be? Would I be disappointed? Also, I realize it's a small city/town, but would I feel out of place as a mid-20s gay male?

Thanks for your help!

Not sure about the job situation, but Butte is like a small version of Pittsburgh. Reminds me of where I used to live in Baltimore too. It's definitely a gritty, eccentric, blue collar town.

Hi AllegheneyAngel:

The climate would be my caution. It is COLD in Butte, and cold by Montana standards.

I think I can deal with the cold climate, as I am originally from Michigan and used to the cold winters there. I imagine Butte is even colder. But honestly that doesn't scare me too much.

I think your biggest hurdle will the be the job market. Pay is pretty poor in your field and Montana doesn't pay well to begin with. Butte is pretty gritty though and I do like Uptown Butte for all its history. Butte does need a lot of social workers though as there are a number of people on assistance and there is some alcohol abuse there.

I'm not sure if there is much of a gay population in Butte so you may get lonely. I know the main cities are Billings and Missoula. Bozeman has some gay people there but I'm not really sure how big it is outside of MSU students. I'm not gay myself but have some acquaintances who are. Some of the senior citizens will have issues with you (Butte is a HUGE Irish Catholic town) but the under-30 crowd will treat you with the normal indifference that everyone is shown.
