Default Flood Watch, South Central and South Eastern Montana, 6/16/2011

Flood watch
national weather service billings mt
435 am mdt thu jun 16 2011

...heavy rainfall event expected over portions of southern montana
and north central wyoming tonight and friday...

.a potent storm system will rapidly develop over northern wyoming
tonight and move across southeast montana on friday. This will
cause shower and thunderstorm activity tonight and wind patterns
will be favorable to cause mountain and foothill locations to see
heavy rainfall. As the system moves into southeast montana it will
bring the heavy rain potential with it before precipitation
decreases friday afternoon. With soil moisture already above
normal rainfall is expected to quickly saturate the ground and
begin to quickly run off. Rivers...creeks and streams running high
from snowmelt so the additional moisture may cause sudden rises in
water levels.

...flood watch in effect from this evening through friday
afternoon...

The national weather service in billings has issued a

* flood watch for portions of montana and north central
wyoming...including the following counties...in montana...big
horn...carter...custer...fallon...powder river...rosebud and
treasure. In north central wyoming...sheridan.

* from this evening through friday afternoon

* heavy rain from showers and thunderstorms is expected tonight
and friday. Rainfall amounts could exceed two inches in some
areas.

* soil moisture remains high which means the rainfall will begin
running off quickly. This could cause flooding of low lying
areas and force small creeks to quickly rise. Larger creeks and
smaller rivers across the region will see rises in response to
the rainfall on friday.

* many areas already have experienced damage due to recent
flooding and this new round of flooding could test repairs.
Travel late tonight could be hazardous as heavy rain makes it
difficult to see areas where water crosses the road.

Wouldn't it be more efficient to notify us of the days when there's NOT a flood or storm warning??!
