As a black woman who spent two years in Butte I can say I enjoyed living in Montana. There are stupid people everywhere (I met one) but I also made some really good, stand-up friends who had my back and weren't afraid to say so. A few words of advice, if this thread is still active...Montana is not NYC, East Coast or even Mid-West. You may meet people who have never met a black person and may ask you questions that may surprise you. Take into consideration what the media images are these days and you'll understand. My advice is to take it at 'face' value and be glad they are asking. They want to know, and you are available. Be friendly, put color on the back burner and you'll be fine. In fact, if I met a good ol' Montana man, I'd move right back! )

I doubt you would run into many racists. Some years ago, I visited with a friend who was the head of the FBI in Kalispell and the north west U.S. The talk turned to racist and militia whackos, and he pointed to a pile of papers maybe an inch and a quarter thick, and he said most of them are just wind, and want to stay hid back up in the mountains. He didn't consider them a problem.
He then pointed to an adjoining pile, and said that the real problem was extremist environmentalists. That pile was piled over three feet deep.

The nutjobs are no different than the one's in Chicago or NYC. Can't get away from them.

Good advice

I enoyed your post. I am biracial (mixed) and am weighing a job offer in Montana.....I am only 25, and still single, so I am HIGHLY concerned about the dating pool in Montana. Can you give me any advice?

From the impression that I am getting....there are plenty of fish in the pool. Who may also be mixed in race. Not that it should matter.

But I will let those who live there right now tell you better.

Thanks! Its not about race, its about having similar interests as the person I am dating. I am a big neo-soul/hip-hop music lover and want to be around people (in general) who share those interests.

I dated while I was there and had interest shown towards me that I passed on. All the men were white. I think the motto is 'live and let live' for the most part. If you are not comfortable with dating outside of your ethnic group, then the pickings might be 'a little slim'. Otherwise, go for it.
