The Associated Press: Montana town offers to take Guantanamo prisoners

Personally it sounds like a great idea to me.

1. It will stimulate the local economy.

2. Escapees are easy to track in the snow.

3. Escapees will probably turn themselves in after a short stint in the Montana winter, and its winter 9 months of the year.

3. Most Montanans grew up around guns and know how to shoot accurately, I know, I grew up not far upstream on the Big Horn River from there.

4. Hardin has a practically new $27 million jail that is looking for customers.

I'm all in favor of it. I trust Montanans to so the job right keeping these criminals under control.

Last year I was on a business trip to a small town in Sweden. It was, as the client executives had told me "up in the woods", others had taken it a step further and said "between the trees". After a few days of working I wanted to check out the surroundings and stumbled upon what looked like a New York city public housing project. Jarring to say the least to find this urban jungle in the absolute middle of this quaint countryside. Looking closer I noticed people in turbans and burkhas etc trudging through this snow covered slice of heaven. Closer yet I saw they were of what appeared to be of African and Middle Eastern background.

Later that night out with the client people for dinner I mentioned this surprising turn in the road. They thought for a moment trying to find precise language to describe what it was, hoping not to offend my evolved American sensibilities, and described it as follows.

Sweden wanted to help political refugees from unrest of the type found in Gitmo. They decided to make this stand in a town of a few thousand quite near the Artic circle. For their efforts they had experienced shocking crimes including severeal "honor killings", the refugees daughters finding viking men nearly irrestible, their fathers took it upon themselves to rid the family "honor" cough cough of this stain.

It was really hard to describe the pain these decent and I would call naive European socialists felt at the thought of such an act. When I listen to these Dem politicians posture about the "horrors' of Gitmo and their grand vision of bringing these thugs into our country I am not pained, I am not naive, I think we're dealing with suicidal nitwits utterly unable to grasp evil.

If a given prisoner is a model citizen, has freely told all he knows, turns out to know absolutely nothing, and was just "in the wrong place at the wrong time" when he got caught up with the really bad guys to the point where you're going to release him anyway, then just release him. There's no need to transfer him to U.S. soil.

If a given prisoner is such a person that no Senator will sign his personal name to the release papers releasing him on U.S. soil, then what possible reason would there be to moving that prisoner from the prison at Gitmo to a prison on U.S. soil? The prisoner would still be in prison.

There is a reason though. That reason is that the elected officials are hoping that this provides the prisoners with additional legal options with the hope that a sympathetic judge will have an overabundance of both stupidity and/or backbone to do what the cowardly elected officials will not. And, that is, release the prisoners on U.S. soil. If the prisoner could simultaneously win a lawsuit that provided him with enough cash to pursue whatever "hobbies" he might be inclined towards, so much the better. Their goal is not to relocate the prisoners. Their goal is to release the prisoners.

To find out whether Hardin fits into their plans, you just need to look at the judges who would be hearing the inevitable cases that are sure to come -- especially the circuit court of appeals. I'm not familiar with the local judges around Hardin, but Montana is currently in the Ninth Circuit Court, so that's a big plus for Hardin getting the prisoners.

I guess if they did pull any of the stunts TypicalCalifornian alludes to, Montanans would be better able than most state citizens to defend themselves. But you might want to be careful what you wish for -- you might get it.

Fodder I agree with all you said and what I should have said to be clear was it became an excuse, an attractive magnet for families and friends...like any prison town. So the collateral damage was the lawyers (ugh) flying in to town asking one and all if they understand Miranda rights lol?

Sorry, I looked at the last two pages of Montana threads and could not see anything about this. Al-quadalope seaons sounds like a good way of dealing with the escapee issue.

Swedes have written elsewhere that Sweden is no longer Swedish; it has become a foreign country, where Swedes are actually a minority in their own country and their own culture is being lost. All thanks to the above.

We don't need more prisons operated for corporate profit at taxpayer expense. Read my posts in the related thread.
