In retrospect, it seems only natural to stare at strangers in such a small, off-the-beaten-path kind of town, but at the time, it creeped me out. Made me want to point at my car parked outside and explain that I was a Montanan, too....

You do need to go back to that store just for the experience. The young couple have done wonders, made changes, brightened up the place, working on bringing back the customers that left for the same reason you did (and they were driving vehicles registered locally!), and they even smile and visit with you! For sure, Scobey is a small town and it may seem a little bit slow or off the beaten path, but there are great people there! It's a safe place to raise your children or even bring your grandchildren back to after experience the craziness of big city living. You can leave your doors unlocked (most of the time), and your neighbors usually keep an eye on things (like most places and usually in a favorable way). You get used to stocking up when you go to the city if you can't get particular needs in town. Every place has it's pros/cons. Most who live in Scobey are pro-rural living!
Ya'll come back ya hear!?

Scobey is beautiful!! If you pm me with your email address I can send you the scobey portion of a series I did earlier this year called "The State of Eastern Montana - Interviews with Eastern Montana Mayors".
In fact, if anyone else is interested, there are segments with mayors from Wolf Point, Scobey, Miles City, Terry, Glendive, Circle, Baker, Ekalaka, Culbertson, Medicine Lake, Plentywood, and Forsyth. Each mayor was asked to talk about attractions in their town, economic outlook, and their legacy as mayor.
(If the mods here are interested, I'd be happy to allow them to have copies of the broadcasts with permission to use them here).
Scobey has a great symphony orchestra (yes, indeed it does!) a summer dancehall show, a great museum, and fantastic community. It has jobs in education, farming, and IT..it's the home of Nemont telecom which serves Northeastern MT and Northwestern ND. Additionally, it is the "major" town in Daniels County. Daniels county has had multiple oil and gas leases sold recently so jobs and growth are inevitable. If you or family members are older, it also has a very lively and enterprising older community.

That's still probably a bit big for most folks' mailboxes. Have you got an FTP site where you could stick 'em so folks could download at their leisure?
