Sounds like Montana, except we have people from California moving in, many with no jobs, making it even more complicated. Rent and prices go up with the new demand, and the locals end up not being able to afford homes anymore.

Don't worry about all this anti-California b.s. A good portion of people that live in Montana are from California. And, in all honestly the coolest people I met while living in Montana were native Californians.

If you don't like smog - do not choose Missoula. I lived there 10 years and due to it being in a valley the pollution gets socked in - and in the summers if there is a forest fire anywhere the smoke ends up in Missoula - and the month of August is disgusting with choking smoke every year - wasn't like this in the past but it is the norm now. Billings is disgusting - an industrial town that has some of the worst air quality in America - we lived there for years - the sugar beet factory fills the town with a god-awful smell and my mother was constantly sick due to SO2 emissions - which you can't easily see but are in the same par as Los Angeles according to her doctor. Kalispell is beautiful - but the community has been going through years of plant closings and the unemployment is high and it is a difficult job market - if you aren't moving there with money it will be difficult. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
