just kinda' stumbled on to ya'll by accident. Then skipped around and read what folks were saying about Glasgow AFB a/k/a St. Marie. I had to smile. My father was in the Air Force and our family walked onto that base before they were even done building! The memories we and many families that were there with us have are for the most part heartwarming. In the summer of 2007 my sister and I went back up. It was very emotional both good and bad. But when we left and to this day we are still wanting to return. We have even talked of buying a home there if for nothing else than to have a place to go away from the insanity of the world. Thank you to ya'll who have kept it going. Hopefully one day I may be one of you

Oh, now you are just bragging!! Yep, you more than likely do see that all the time. But, most people will never be as lucky to see something like that so you are a privileged few! Have a great Thanksgiving!

meatloaf123, and others, especially prairieschooner...the thing about your area that makes it so special is the close knitt, quiet lifestyle.. the isolation and lack of amenities will only protect you so far.. you've seen what has happened to areas of Montana now that its been "discovered".. why are you so determined to have people notice you.. you will ONLY succeed in destroying what you have.. don't think .. well, we'll just have a few people notice us and add to our community.... that's not how it works.. someday you will TRULY succeed in getting someones attention, and what you have will be gone.. please don't respond to my post in this thread.. just read it and move on.. if you feel a NEED to respond, you can send me a private message and call me any names you feel necessary.. but please, for your own sake, stop posting.. and let this whole thread just fade away.. hell, if it were me, I'd try to get the thread removed.

Was in Glasgow in 1966 and 1967. My husband was in the Air Force, and our son was born there. Haven't been back, but planning to visit in May or June. It is 1800 miles awayfrom my home, but looking forward to seeing Glasgow and the old Air Force base. My husband did quick draw shooting there, does anyone know if that is still done there?

Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture, Glasgow Montana
  • Here is a link to the chamber, maybe you can contact them directly, you may find a very diminished town according to the locals. Great Pamida though!

I get back there every few ears for anniversaries, weddings, etc. and am always shocked by how much Glasgow continues to shrink. The people are great but I am a bit worried what will be there 20 years from now. If Pamida is the top attraction there are problems.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but does anyone know anything about Ophiem..? It's about 50 miles north of Glasgow, almost to the boarder.
I lived in Ophiem for a year in the mid fifties, and have always wanted to visit to see what it's like now. It was tiny when I lived there, and since I left the Ophiem AF base closed, making the town really tiny.
I have tried to make contact with someone from the area to no avail. I remember when I lived there, Glasgow was the big city down the road. I was surprised to see the current population of Glasgow is only 2900.
I think the year I was at OHS there were about 30 students total. I moved from there to So Calif, where the high school had over 3000 students.! Talk about culture shock..!
I plan to stop in Ophiem this summer while on vacation. I'm sure I will be able to see everything there is to see in an hour or less, but it will satisfy 50 years of wondering...
If anyone knows about that town, I'd love to hear from you...
thanks...

I've been through there a couple times in the last few years and I'm sure there is much less now than there was in the 50's! One can't say Opheim without mentioning Granrud's!

Granrud's Lefse Shack - Home-Made Style Norwegian Lefse - Gifts, Aprons, T-Shirts, Sweatshirts, Caps - Opheim, Montana

Also founds some pics of the old pics of the base:
