I think the author portrays an obvious bias.

I also think that the picture painted by the article shares much with Alaska Natives, Blacks, Mexicans/Latinos, Indians and Whites or any other race who inhabit this country and are impoverished (or not) and possess an entitlement mentality.

I am not going to get into the systematic destruction and atrocities commited against many once great cultures of North America, this is not what this is about. This about peoples who have the same opportunity as every citizen of the USA but choose not to pursue them.

As to the rate of felony convictions I am going to guess that the majority of them are theft, violence and drug/alcohol related in no particular order or combination, just as it generaly seems to be with other impoverished demographics/locations.

Education and opportunity is there for ALL. Those on the reservation, in the village, ghetto, bayou, trailer park or what-have-you that desire better for themselves need to make a conscious decision and effort to make it happen.

The attempt to legislate a permanent position for an American Indian on the Parole Board is an outright example of racial bias, the very thing this effort (and article) claims to vilify. Does legislation exist guaranteeing a positon for a White, Black, Mexican, Italian or person of Other race ? I bet not . Imagine the outrage if such a bill like that was introduced in the interests of a White person.

Protection under the law is the same for an Indian as it is for anyone else, legal representation is available just the same. The comparison of a Non-Indian being hauled into a Tribal court is ridiculous, regardless of jurisdiction the accused is subject to the governing authority. If one commits a crime they are subject to whatever penalties may be meted out.

If I know anymore about the legal system of the USA it is due to the fact I went to school. I have read and own a copy of the Constitution of The United States, as every citizen of this country should.

Descrimination and adverse treatment inside the correctional system, regardless of race, is one more example of racism that no amount of legislation can erase.

A big share of the Indian Population live on reservations.

The statistic I would like to see, is what percentage of the Indians in jail were sent there by their own Tribal Courts where they are judged by their own race, not the white people.

Federal Judge's Racist Email May Have Violated US Ethics Code | Mother Jones
Given my complexion, I"d hate to appear in front of this guy. I'd better watch my p's and q's before I get an all expense paid trip to Deer Lodge.

I have seen that before. While I do not condone the judges actions, I have to say that our President is not the only man in this country who is named Barack, and it seems to be fairly common across the Atlantic ocean.

Secondly, I find that lousy joke a greater affront to the "mom" .

Thirdly, it makes no reference to any political office.

Fourthly, I fail to see the comparison to the OP. If we are going to draw comparisons and make implications we can also imply; that the two who had sex were consenting adults, or was it a case of rape, after all the "mother" mentions having difficulty remembering much of the party. However, it "sounds" like she had sex with multiple partners... at least that is what is "implied".

What we do KNOW is that she (mom) is not racist, well if the sex was consentual that is.

How is the 'joke" relevant to the OP ?

It's not about the joke, it's about the judge. The op is titled, "Institutionalized racism in Montana?"
The Federal Government has jurisdiction over felony crimes committed on Montana Reservations. Indian people routinely appear before Judge Cebull.

I live on a reservation, the CSKT (Flathead) Reservation specifically.

If I were forced to guess, it would be that actual incarcerations here only take place after a great deal of leniency has been shown by all facets of the justice system, except in cases of proven violent crime. And that applies to all races represented here.

But I do think arrest and incarceration in this Country have been on an incredible rise for the past 20 years or so. And I do think that most of those being put away are members of minority races or the impoverished classes. My concern is that imprisoning people has become a super big business, and a profitable one.

Kinda scary for everyone, if you ask me.

What I find REALLY interesting about that is that Judge Cebull will undergo scrutiny by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court with Chief Justice Alex Kozinsky who, has been reprimanded in the past for similar misconduct.

Very interesting. I look forward to the the ruling.

If he sentences you, you'll go to federal prison (e.g., Leavenworth; Supermax in Colorado; Marion Ill., etc). Deer Lodge is state prison where state district judges send you.
