Default Question about moving to NW Montana

First off, let me thank those of you who actually take time to read these questions and respond..especially when it's a lot of the same type of questions being posted..:-}

I am looking at moving to Montana in the next year or 2 (hopefuly sooner than later). I grew up in a small town in south Texas. When I say small I mean 1 light, 1 grocery/gas station and 2 feed stores...lol. Since then I have traveled all over the country from the West (Bend, OR, Boise, ID) to the East (MD,NC, PA) and am currently in the D.C area. I can't stand it here! I have 2 small kids and don't want to raise them in this type of environment...I want to find a good small town to raise my kids in. My husband and son are hunters, fishermen, snowboarders, love camping, and just general outdoorsmen. We want to buy at least a min. of 30 acres and be able to actually shoot a gun on our own property, so the subdivision type property will not work for us (not to mention the pains of HOA). I also want a reasonable priced piece of land to build on.

I have been looking at the North Western areas....like Columbia Falls..(I am open to other suggestions!) My husband will travel by plane often so I really would like to be within an hour from an airport (small airport could work too). What are the best resourses to use when looking for actual land for sale? I have seen a lot on the internet through realtors, but are there any good newspapers or something better to use??? I know word of mouth is the best, but unfortunatly I don't know anyone in that area. Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!!!

Polson, Bigfork, Kalispel, Whitefish, are all nice areas. All essentially within the same area. Land of course gets cheaper the further you get from the lake. You could also look further south in the Hamilton region. Any of those spots will put you within 30 mins of a larger city, at least by MT standards.

amc, I just asked my realtor what was going on with that listing I posted and was told they are splitting the house and 8 acres off to make it more affordable. Just thought I'd let you know....

JIMJ, I love Bigfork. I went there several years ago and loved the feel of the town. I took a tour of the golf course and the town. It was in August and if I remember right they had a fair or festival of some kind. All I remember is there were a lot of berries. I can't remember which kind.
