The Wife and I recently acquired a larger fifth wheel toy hauler and a couple of quads. Since we are new to quading we aren't really sure where the best places are to go. I know there are lots of trails and forest land in Montana we could ride on, but we are looking for a good place where we can set up our RV, ride our ATV's, and preferably with a lake close by where we can fish as well.

Most of the campgrounds with adjacent trails seem to be smaller ones that may not allow easy access for our rig. We don't necessarily need services like electric or water hookups. Just a nice, clean, and quieter place to camp and base our activities from.

Thanks in advance

A quick Google search on "ATV trails in Montana" will give you lots of information.

Here is one link. Be sure to note that you can obtain maps of legal trails for vehicles.

We went camping & hiking the past few days south of Red Lodge on the Beartooth (Hwy 212) on Rock Creek Rd. Lots of ATV riders going up toward Glacier Lake trailhead & up Hellroaring plateau. Looked like a blast. There are 3 pay campgrounds & then beyond those are lots of free camping sites. Folks were pulling in 5th wheelers, trailers, trailers full of 4-wheelers, etc.

How much if any snow is left in the valley?
Is it clear up to the parking area yet?(Glacier Lake trail head )

fyi
When you get to the top of the Hellroaring plateau From the trailhead, there is an old mining road, which is closed because it is in the designated wilderness, but this road makes a good hiking trail. No wheeled vehicles can travel here.

Glacier Lake trail head, From the trailhead, it is in the designated wilderness, No wheeled vehicles can travel here.

Hellroaring Plateau Trail accesses a chain of lakes with fine, high mountain fishing. The trailhead is near the top of a winding mountain road. Built in the 1930s to develop chrome deposits on Hellroaring Plateau, it offers a spectacular view of Rock Creek.Length: 4.5 milesTrail Begins: Forest Road 3004Trail Ends: Sliderock LakeArea Map: Custer National Forest (Beartooth Division) USGS Map1: Mount Maurice USGS Map2: AlpineTownship 9S; Range 18E; Section 13

the fire road does have some spectacular vistas but we(you) can tow a 5er all the way up rock creek. You can drive a car up it, makes for some boring ATVing

Funny you should ask. We parked our 4X4 truck at the last pullout before the road was drifted over with snow & hiked the last mile to the trailhead. On our way down some kids had decided to try going on through & got good & stuck with a subaru no less trying to pull them out with a towrope and a line of 6 vehicles all waiting behind.

Thanks, we're heading out next week.

We like to camp just below that turnout.

There was a *huge* puddle right before that camping spot, but was easy to go thru. Probably the snow will be gone by next week after the kids broke it all up digging themselves out!

Have fun!
