I have spent a lot of time in Townsend and would say it's a great place to raise a family. If you have kids who want to be active in sports or other school activities, they will have the opportunity to shine in Townsend. There is abundant outdoor recreation, including hunting, fishing, boating, hiking, and camping. It's a little over a half an hour to most of the stores in Helena and about an hour or less to Bozeman. Perfect location. Not too exciting, but a great place to experience small town life.

It's actually in a wide valley, near a large reservoir, with peaks reaching nearly 10,000 feet on the east side and a smaller, very accessible mountain range (the Elkhorns) on the west. Not flat. You would also be located near the headwaters of the Missouri River (about 30 miles away) with abundant wildlife, including deer, elk, moose, bald eagles, and all types of water fowl. The Missouri River runs right by the town from the south and dumps into Canyon Ferry, just to the north. And, it's actually considered to be a banana belt for SW Montana (not nearly as cold as Bozeman, Butte, etc.).

Small, quiet, outdoorsy-scenic with big wide-open views, a quick drive to Helena if you crave the big city. Only drawback I recall is the twin-engine mosquitos off the east side of the lake!! and sometimes there's fog on the highway along the river.

The fallfest is the first weekend of October. Lots of fun. Polka band, brats, beer, kettle corn...home made stuff, pumpkins, pies....irony? Last year's fest was sponsored by "Adam and Eve" adult toys! There is a "store" that carries these items down the road by Wheat Montana.

Buy a boat. Great lake there for fishing. I love Townsend...folks are a lot of fun there. Great small town...and a good location, close to Helena, not far from Bozeman, couple of hours to Billings...
