I feel bad for the native Montanans, even though I don't like them. I've never met people so set in their ways, and usually drunk. This is the life they want, beer, hunting, gambling, more beer... But "Easterners" are really ruining this way of life they've chosen for themselves. I am one of these "Easterners" (though I'm not trying to change anything) and don't worry Montanans, I WILL be leaving when my lease is up, till then I'll try to discourage any more of "my kind" from moving here. I'd be pissed off too if I had the life I wanted and city folks came around trying to change it all.

I don't know where you live or where you're from, Dr.Lady, but I'm as happy as you are that you are leaving. I feel that every person has a right to their opinion, but when one makes generalizations about the population of an entire state due to experiencing a few people who aren't to your liking, it just irks me! Someone did the same thing yesterday on the Wyoming threads. Such generalizations just make you sound unintelligent, uneducated, and unlikeable. I'm not saying you are any of those...but stating things the way you do makes people see you as that way. Please don't judge all of us "westerners" by the few who aren't so desireable.

NOt to mention alot are moving just for the simple fact they can't make it where they are living. So would u rather they starve and be miserable. Or some move because they are losing their children to gangs or death. Why can't we find a place on this earth that is good for our children to grow up. Why can't u welcome newcomers and educate them on the land you are lucky to have lived on?
I myself am not people crazy..not because i don't necessarily like people I just get nervous around people exspecially ones I don't know. But anyway I would never be rude to someone just because they moved to my town. If anything I'd be all the more nicer.

I have not met many hateful people in Montana, I find it mainly to be people from out east or the left coast who think they can change things. it is best to leave people alone and try to do it the Montana way instead of bringing your eastern ways into out land. if you have a better way to do things, show us that it works, not force it upon us by screwing us over in goverment. not alot gets us mad, unless you start talking about the goverment and its screwed up laws.

hey guys...
Im new to this posting biz... I was born and raised in helena. I married and moved to rural NE then moved home some years ago. MT is a great place to be and a great place to raise kids. Sos NE, wy ks nd sd etc The life style you seem to seek isnt mt its rural. People who wave with there whole hand, for example. The reason so many people here resent out of staters is because we like our rural mind set. We want to know our neighbors.to meander to work looking at the sunrise visit with people on the side walk. make faces at kids in strollers. drive on dirt roads and raise our kids as we see fit. People who come in here, drive fast talk fast, walk fast flip you off if you are only driving 10 mph over the speed limit, glare at you over their cell in stores and demand there be a starbucks on every corner. They demand the schools raise their kids, so they dont have to. Thats what makes people bonkers. If you want to be a part of our calm laid back family oriented life style. Come on. If you want to live in a subdivision with a hectic schedule and need someone to entertain your kids so you dont have to parent stay where you are.

I spent some time in Montana and LOVED it!!! Went to downtown Billings, to the Stockyards, over by Miles City (horse sale), by Bozeman (barn dance) and think it was all great. I was up there looking at horses, wearing a cowboy hat, Wrangler jeans and my Roper boots......obviously, I really fit in. Only thing, folks there didn't like my California plate and one left a nasty note on my windshield which was ok (I understood).
Montana people are very nice, but when they see a California or ? plate, it can "urk" them. They like their lifestyle there and don't want to change it and that was fine with me. If the winters there didn't bother my hip replacement and shoulder (torn tendons repaired) and there was work up there for my wife and I, we sure would move there!

I figure when I get moved back, I'll proudly display my old California license plate -- with a few fresh bullet holes through it.

60-70 years ago my grandfather displayed a California license plate --- on his outhouse. Never knew why (gramps had never been to CA that we know - or had relatives or friends in CA), asked my Dad and he doesn't know why. By the way, we are friendly --- the outhouse hadn't been used for several years, one of the new neighbors from out of state was building his house and living in a make shift arrangement so the outhouse was offered and accepted. It still sits in its "new site" (25 years new) and is used once in awhile and has a million dollar view of the mountains and valley.

Out of state lic. plates used to be considered decorative just about everywhere, and lots of people collected 'em and nailed 'em to various outbuildings. I think it hies from when automobiles were still relatively newfangled (the older generation back then having grown up with horses and buggies) and people didn't travel near as much. So having lic.plates from other states was the next best thing to visiting in person.
There's a pretty good greasy spoon here that has a bunch of old lic.plates as decoration... the owner is an old-time railroad crew cook.

That's funny, a used outhouse... sortof like a used house trailer
Where I lived outside of Bozeman/Belgrade, there was no running water, so I had an outhouse for many years. You get used to it quick enough, even if you grew up with indoor plumbing. The last one had a carpeted seat... sure was nice when it was 40 below zero!
