Default Is there any friendly people in Montana?

I don't think i've ever ran across such hateful people. Is there anyone out there that has anything kind to say? Where I come from there is such thing as respect your neighbor. No one is a stranger here. Everyone is treated as if they are an old friend. I guess I thought the rest of the world was like that. You people should be ashamed of yourselves. None of us anywhere like all the changes that are coming about in our states but that is no reason to blame a certain individual. Blame just those trying to do the changin. NOt to mention alot are moving just for the simple fact they can't make it where they are living. So would u rather they starve and be miserable. Or some move because they are losing their children to gangs or death. Why can't we find a place on this earth that is good for our children to grow up. Why can't u welcome newcomers and educate them on the land you are lucky to have lived on?
I myself am not people crazy..not because i don't necessarily like people I just get nervous around people exspecially ones I don't know. But anyway I would never be rude to someone just because they moved to my town. If anything I'd be all the more nicer.

It's not everyone, only certain posters to this forum. There are many friendly people in Montana!! This forum probably only represents 1% of all people in any state. Also, you have to keep in mind that stories tend to get exaggerated and perception is everything. The same goes for blogs or other online resources - you're hitting such a small percentage of the true population. The only way to truly get a feel for a town would be to visit it, hang out in the local stores and just talk to people.

Where do you live? It's a very large state with many different subcultures and attitudes.

I just noticed that you have an earlier post saying that you will be moving to MT, however, your post gives the impression that you do live in MT and you find the people rude. Please don't tell me that you are basing your opinions off of an internet forum...

I was in Butte about a month ago, as i was standing outside a restaurant trying to decide if i was going to eat there, i was yelled at for no reason, the man threatened to kick my f****** a** among other things . i though this was an isolated incident, but i keep seeing posts about how rude people are in Montana, I love the state, i think it's a great state, but i don't know if the people there are so great.

Hateful ??

Since October 2006, the wife and I have spent about 30 days in Montana, during 3 separate trips. Maybe I'm blind or just lucky but it seems everytime I visit Montana, the more I want to move there.

I have found people very friendly. Sometimes too friendly. It seems I can't even get out of a grocery store without spending several minutes chatting with the locals. This seems to include both the smaller and mid-sized towns. The larger cities seem to be about neutral in friendliness.

I did run into one small problem though. I had a make a small adjustment in my driving attitude. In my part of the country, if someone waved at me while I was driving down the road, they were waving with one finger. In Montana, they are waving with their entire hand.

No I don't live in Montana but we have been considering moving there but it seems like I come across so many rude people and yes on the net. It just worries me is this the norm or just a small group. I'm the type of person that I make everyone I meet feel comfortable and I enjoy being around those same type of people. Given the fact that people do make me nervous. I am not comfortable in large groups of all and if its rude people I 'm really uncomfortable.
Right now we are just playing around with the idea of moving. We live in Indiana but it's so hard to find any secluded areas. It seems like the only small towns we have left are run down or all filled up. Not to mention the humidity here bout kills me. I would love to find a place that is near a nice small town. We have always tried to raise our kids to be good wholesome kids but anymore to do that we almost have to keep them at home. They love riding their horses, fishing, walking through the woods but it seems they are about the only ones that enjoy doing that. It's getting harder and harder to keep them safe and sound minded with all this is going on around us. So many kids these days spend more time doing what they shouldn't be doing. I just want them to be able to do as we did when were teens. I want to be able to let them go places and know they are safe. But is this possible

People are mostly friendly. As with anywhere, there are some jerks but they are the minority.

Montana has some of the friendliest people in the country. The rule is: don't **** us off, and we won't **** you off. I have never been in another place where people are so helpful or happy. You have made a premature judgment call in saying that we are all rude.

By the way, it's "Are there," not "is there." That just drove my inner grammar freak up the wall.

People who jump to conclusions, based off of an unproven fear is what drives me up the wall. Now, that doesn't mean that I am rude, it just means that if you are too shallow to check things out for yourself before you spread a rumor, chances are that you won't like me. Now if you want to get on the good side of a Montanan or any other person, take the time to say hi, wave at them when you go by them, help them when they need help and treat them with a certain amount of respect. Then keep doing these things until they make you mad for something that they did to you or your family or friends.

Default Good People

When I first read your post, I kind of took offense at it. Then I realized that you were actually asking a question.....asking whether all people in Montana are rude. The answer is NO!!!! I have traveled all over the state (and it's BIG) for my previous job, spending nights and sometimes weeks in almost every town, both large & small. I was a school photographer so was in & out of the schools, patronized motels, restaurants, gas stations, shops, etc. all along the way. Although people in some places were even nicer than others, I found that in general the people were wonderful statewide. For the most part the children in the schools (K-12) were polite and well-behaved. I think that speaks volumes for the way people are...their children are a true indication of how they were raised. The merchants made me feel welcome and important wherever I went. I think the naysayers on this forum are just the "Negative Nellies" out there, as there as the same types anywhere. It's just like the news, you hear all about the bad things happening but very little about the good. I, too, believe you should visit the areas you are considering moving to and then judge for yourself. My guess is that you will find Montanans, whether lifelong residents or "transplants", to be pleasant, welcoming, and friendly folks. Best of luck to you!
