I-94 versus I-90 to get to Montana from the east? (Billings: lodging, moving van)

We're driving from Philadelphia to Bozeman next week and curious why google maps & AAA suggest cutting up I-694 to I-94 at Minneapolis then into North Dakota down to Bozeman instead of sticking with I-90 through South Dakota into Wyoming and up to Bozeman.

Does anyone have a recommendation either way? THANKS!

I personally like I-90 though it can get boring at times. Good thing you're doing it before winter, it can really be dicey at times.

I've driven from near Philly to Bozeman but detoured from around MN and dropped into Denver. One of the only problems I experienced going north into WY was heavy traffic, but it was beautiful in WY, and great buys on cowboy boots (half price).

i would stick with i90,its much more scenic imo and i think it would be about the same timewise

Agreed, 90 is more scenic and faster.

My son is moving to Billings from NW Michigan and we just took the first load out and came back on Sun. We took 90 out and 94 back until we switched off and went through the UP on 2.

I preferred 90, there are also more things to see along the way, Wall Drug, The Badlands, Mitchell's Corn Palace, Mt Rushmore, etc.

I drove from North Carolina to Montana about two years ago by myself in a moving van. I had already sent my children out here while I tied up loose ends, and I wanted the quickest and safest route getting out here (it was in March, still winter weather in some states I passed though). I got a TripTik from AAA and they gave me some wacky route that went through the middle of the country and up through Colorado. Friends who had driven cross country before told me NOT to take that route, and to take I-90 instead. I went back to AAA and had them re-route me to Montana using I-90 and print me out a new Triptik. (The Rep. there said they will give you the most "scenic" route if you don't request otherwise). It turned out to be a breeze. I-90 was great, low traffic, plenty of places to quickly get off and get a bite to eat, fill up on gas, or find lodging, etc (well, until I got to South Dakota. Pretty barren and desolate through some areas there until you get to Billings, Montana). Well, I hoped this helped a little.
