I am fairly new to montana and currently live in Helena. I was accepted into UM there in Missoula. I will be taking as many classes online but may have to take classes on campus. I am trying to figure out how bad of a commute this would be mainly during the winter. I know how long it takes to get to Missoula from here but my job is here and this is where my house is. I cant afford to pick up and move to another city so soon. Any information would be greatly appreciated.

How often do you have to be on campus? If it is a once a week thing, like a lab, it should be pretty feasible for fall semester. Spring semester will be touchy as you'll be going over passes at least 2x a week. Maybe you could have a backup couch in Missoula available for when they get closed. If you have to be there 3x a week, I would think the gas money would make this uneconomical.

Buy a good 4 wheel drive, put studded tires on it and invest in tire chains and a survival kit. Mac Pass in the winter is dangerous!

Lot of people do challenge the pass in the winter, it can be done, but if you decide on that, buy a lot of life insurance, just in case

People have done it. If they have class two days a week, it can be done. It costs money, gas, and time.
If you have a full time job, no way.

A part time job, maybe, but forget about free time.

Plan on extra time in winter, and budget or find a place to spend the night if it is too bad for driving.
The issue is, are you looking at two or three years of this? One or two semesters would be my max. I know I
I could not do more.

Perhaps I misunderstood. I take commute to mean daily back & forth, as in commutable distance. It seems OP may be looking at more weekend warrior type driving, which is do able. The country between Helena and Missoula is not hospitable for winter regular "have to" travel. Commuting usually means early & late in day driving which in winter means in the dark.
