There are areas I would avoid here. Helena is kinda strange in that there is not really a good side or bad side of town. I would stay away from streets named after trees (sounds weird but true) and yeah, avoid downtown. My favorite subdivisions are Sunhaven, Treasure State and Ten Mile but I have a kid so they appeal to me that way. MT City and Clancy are nice places too. People have been avoiding the valley and East Helena due to some issues they are having (sewer and water). MThawki said it best with suggesting you rent a bit before buying. But make sure you find a good rental too. Some of the ones I have been in here were terrible.

And the Subaru bit was right on as well. We just got a Sub and it handles pretty nice on ice. But if you just take your time and plan ahead more with driving you should be fine. Shift into neutral when you start to slide or come up to a spot you know will be slick and it really helps. I am not sure why but when you cut the power from the engine it makes it easier for the brakes to work.

Well good luck with your move!
Just a little curious here december girl...How long have u lived in Helena...I lived there for a year and i didnt think there was a bad part of Helena...I have two small children and i think its a good place to raise children....Not sure if putting ur car in neutral is a good idea either...maybe thats where they came up with the whole "watch out for women drivers "lol its a joke so dont freak!!!you kinda make it sound for this guy to stay in Cali...and you have to be a fool to waste money in renting...its a major waste...most of the time ur paying someones house payment...the only thing i didnt care for in Helena was the whole small town tring to act like a BIG town...lol that drove me nuts....

I have lived here for about 5 years. There are bad areas of every town. That is just a reality. And putting your car in neutral is something my dad, who is a cop, taught me. Probably got it from one of those driving courses they take. And while renting may be a waste of money, so is buying a house you aren't ready for. You should never buy just for the sake of buying. It is more important to take some time to make a good decision about what you are looking for.

I use Verizon Wireless Broadband. Good anywhere there is a Cell signal. I'm basically a hillbilly living in the hills in the Blue Cloud/Priest Pass/Austin/Birdseye/Feather Piped Ranch/Rimini areas. Rimini is a ghost town owned by a friend of a friend of mine. I go out there to visit other folks like me hiding from something or another. These are troubled times.

You aren't the only one! I have several options, but resort to a cig lighter at times.
