Rickers, I don't classify mobile import gangs as a "gang problem". I've seen the occasional hells angel here and the bikers do come through either on their way somewhere else or just like everyone else to vacation. I stand by my statement that at this time there is no resident gangs, especially the most violent kid ones.
As for snakes and spiders, I've yet to see a poisoness snake. I've heard third or fourth hand of a couple that people have seen but out of everyone I know that spends time in the woods I've not heard of any first hand. As for spiders, we have hobo spiders and black widows just like everywhere else and I only know one person that has been bitten on the finger when messing with stuff that had been under the house for a long time.
I think your child will be fine here for many years to come since low wages and harsh winters tend to keep the riff raff out. Don't get me wrong we do have drug and booze problems here just like everywhere else but most kids are too busy doing stuff to get involved. I would say a kid has a better chance getting wound up in chew tobbacco and beer than anything else and as long as you parent your child the odds of that happening are reduced.
Good luck with what ever you do, I know we made the right choice to raise our son here.

So please, tell me nothing but the truth and don't sugar coat anything and please, don't try and talk me out of it.
I also couln't help but notice on the state stat's about people of race.. mostly white? Are people friendly on race or are they not?

You may be correct about there being no real large resident gangs in Montana but our little town just had a bunch of bikers visit for the weekend. There were about 200 mixed Hermanos, Bandidos, and Hombres, many wearing colors. There were only a few fights but if you look at what these guys are really up to (nationwide drug distribution) I would say that we definitely have a gang problem starting. I'm retreating to the east side real soon and I may be developing an attitude like Joejoeman, I am getting real sick and tired of what is happening to western Montana. I can imagine how much meth, extacy, pcp, crack and heroin they left here.

Yes, I am a native oregonian and have lived here my whole life and have seen this city grow beyond belief. I have live here 39yrs and I am soo done with portland. I will of course miss my beautiful pacific ocean and the columbia river gorge and waking up seeing Mt. Hood and Mt. St. Helens(on clear days, of course : ) We have a huge meth problem here coming in from mexico along with all the gang activity it involves. The I-5 corridor is the #1 route of transport between mexico and canada. Its not uncommon to see several drug busts on the news of mega pounds on a weekly basis. Our police have closed down all the local meth labs but there is no stopping the influx from mexico. I had to make myself do a reality check and take off my rose colored glasses.
Oh, I will of course miss our transit bus and lightrail systems. But they are under pressure from our city, state and county law inforcement to place uniformed officers on the transit systems.

You are preaching to the choir. Can you remember when Oregon began to change, real estate increasing, farms sub-divided to death? This is the response coming from native montana folk, they feel just like we do, do not want their state ruined. Unfortunatly the encroachment has already taken hold in the Western part of the state. There is no Mayberry here, (I lift from another post) Only people stuggling to make a living and raise their family. Problems here just like anywhere. If you need a job, well they are few and far between. However, the community I have moved to reminds me of the oregon I once knew. Wave at ya on the highway, don't poke your nose in my business, hey I will solve the problem myself instead of the government doing it for me. I bought a broken down house in town, unoccupied for 3 years. Have a tidy job, educated myself on the county. Do lots of research, visit in all seasons, I looked for 3 years, be prepared. I wanted isolation and that is what I have. Keep my head down and stay friendly. good luck

I will also disagree about no gangs in Montana. I was a Freshman in high school in 1994 and the school created some anti-gang rules in the school to help prevent it from happening. They were concerned about a number of students creating a gang. And I'm from Whitefish!
I don't know what's it like now, but would find it highly improbable that there are no gangs in Montana. They may not graffiti the streets like elsewhere or do drive by shootings or what have you, but I assure you there are gangs there just like everywhere else. You just have to look hard enough.
