Greetings everyone. I'm a recently transplanted, recently divorced, retired young (53) aging baby boomer. I sold my house on the west coast, sold everything, loaded up what was left in the minivan and headed east. All my life I've wanted to live here but life is what happens while you're busy making other plans. Anyway...I am looking for a place to rent in the country or a small town somewhere, I don't care where, in western Montana. I've heard so much about places like Helena and it's surrounds or Bozeman or even Great Falls. I'm currently riding out the holidays alone in Billings. It's a nice city but there's just too many people here for me. I'm open and appreciative to anyone on this forum who might have a suggestion or advice. I check craigslist and the local papers daily without much success. I'm not interested in property management firms or $500k houses for sale. I'm a country boy and farm hand so not afraid of work. I like to chop wood and carry water. I thought I would put it out there among you great folks on this forum who are familiar with the fabric of Montana...see what comes up.

Peace

Welcome. It is a big state. There are many sweet spots. Traveling about looking for one in Winter might be tricky. I would go look at Eureka. It is one of those spots people like but lack of employment opportunities keep them from. If that is too far removed, then the areas around Thompson Falls. Rentals are not plentiful anywhere. You will be more likely to find what you want off a note on a bulletin board at the local bank or cafe. You are retired so slow down and take your time exploring. You might be happy with a caretaker spot somewhere. Good luck.

Much of the areas in western Montana are expensive. Have you considered Laurel or Columbus? Those are close to Billings and have nice down to earth people. Bozeman is high priced but some of the areas around it might be a bit cheaper. Helena may be an option, don't have a lot of experience with it.
