Hi, my husband got a job offer in Billings, MT. We have been living in Texas for more than 4 years now. We have a toddler, 3 years. He just got back from his final interview and seems very happy about the place overall. I am home, trying to get ideas, where to look for a house, location, day care, etc.
Can anyone provide day care information. Housing experience, etc?

Sorry I can't help with those questions, however I live in Sheridan Wyoming, 140 miles South. I travel to Billings for medical and shopping. You can't go wrong. with Billings and I am sure your questions will be answered. Good luck!

I will try to sum things up. I am originally from Billings and most of my family still lives there.

There are walkable areas of Billings and most of them will be around Pioneer Park and an area I define as "near West End" which is between Grand and Central and 30th and 15th. These two areas are pretty much the main areas where people can walk to restaurants and shops and reasonably close to schools.

Houses can vary wildly depending on the size and the amenities in the area. I will say that Billings is rare in that buying an upper end home does not get your child a better HS education. It does buy a better elementary school education so it does matter for you. All three public HS are good and each have their own issues with cliques, drugs, ect. Billings does have police officers in the schools but it's not like Houston where there are metal detectors at the doors and armed guards. When I graduated, the officer was largely in an office as a liaison to handle severe discipline issues and run drug dogs through the halls from time to time. The better elementary schools tend to be in the more affluent areas but if you work with your child at home, it can be overcome. The less affluent areas have more ESL students.

Billings is a pretty safe place. You can go out every night and not be accosted by homeless people or drug runners as they are in pretty defined areas. Even the South Side, the area of the city south of Montana Avenue, is pretty tame compared to the ghettos in Houston.

The Heights is isolated but should be more integrated over the next few years as they will have direct access to the interstate with a new bridge being built over the Yellowstone by Lockwood. The only real rush hour in Montana is on Main Street at 8 AM and 5 PM as people in the Heights have to use it to get to work. 24th Street in the West End can be bad too but there are other routes people can use whereas Main has very few alternatives.
