SaraP,
Look for areas with stronger year round economies. Drive around and look for towns with clean streets, full store fronts, and general vitality. Towns with many walking --less driving areas will be more artsy as well as places with colleges. Some towns look great in summer for two months but are dead the rest of the year. Good luck.

If you end up looking at Portland area, check out Silverton, OR. Small town, fairly artsy, antique and thrift shops, on edge of forest but still close to Portland...

I'd try Missoula again. It has it's lame suburban big box store part of town but I've been to quite a few of the cities in Montana and they all are like that. Missoula is more progressive due in large part to the university. The downtown part is pretty cool to hang out in I thought.
Billings is alright too I guess.

Eureka, MT as about the same size as Thompson Falls, but the average age is 40 and about 20% are between 25-34 yrs, three times the level of TF. About a hour or so to Whitefish or Fernie BC.

Philipsburg and Seeley Lake have some artists. Would need to like snow.

I would not recommend Polson. I lived there for a year and half and got out of there. It's an incredibly beautiful area, and yes the bay is breath taking, but the town itself is very economically depressed, stores downtown are mostly shuttered, and the ones that opened get very little business. Pendleton just closed for good. People can't afford much there... with an abundance of drug problems and crime. I'm sorry to put the area down, but I feel a need to be honest here. All you have there for shopping is Walmart and two grocery store chains to pick from. The restaurants, but one are just awful. There is ONE art shop there, and the 2nd one closed due to lack of business. Newly established businesses are on shaky ground.

Have you thought of Helena? Seems to be more your speed, OP.

Let me put it to you this way, ,my husband part timed as manager for one of those grocery stores and CONSTANTLY had problems with shop lifters and theft. That should put it into some perspective. It's simply not a flourishing area to live in. It's beautiful to drive through, stop, look at the water and view, then get back in your car and keep on driving.
