always been fasinated with the quaint town of Cooke City.Montana!!
The Beartooth is closed from mid-October to (hopefully) Memorial Day Weekend. The area between Cooke City and Gardiner (through Yellowstone) is open all year, therefore providing access to Livingston and other larger towns. I'm not sure if the Chief Joseph Byway (between Cooke City and Cody) is open at all during the Winter.

Smile Beartooth is spectacular

I took my nearly 83 yr. old mother and 3 kids over the Beartooth this past summer. I drove a Mazda mini-van with no problems. There were plent of other cars going up and down, even after 4pm. My mom tolerated it well. We did notice that if we took a deep breath our lungs seemed to ask "that's all"? I would turn around and do it all over again without a second thought.
We went in early June and the Beartooth Pass was closed 2 days in a row-once for rock slides caused by a storm, the next for snow that had to be cleared. The gate will be closed across Rte. 212 in Red Lodge if there are problems. We stayed in Silver Gate and used the NorthEast entrance to YNP.
My daughter and I had a headache the first night there, but we aren't sure if that was from the altitude or the propane gas pilot light in the cabin. We were fine the next day. My mother was outstanding at all those altitudes- she also did some high alt. in Switzerland when she was 78! Definitely do it-she said this summer was a trip of a lifetime. If you can make a trip to SD, see the Badlands as well. No photos or travel show can compare to seeing them in person.

Default Chief Joseph

The CHief Joseph hwy with access to Cody is closed in the winter too. The only access to Cooke City is through Gardner and across the top of the park.

Good to know. I thought surely the Chief Joseph was closed that time of year as well, but figured as soon as I said it was that I'd be proven wrong!

daveyjones,
I got that same package from MT tourism. That is a great map! I agree, a map like that would not be free in a lot of states.

We finally got our itinerary planned for to include Beartooth and Chief Joseph highway this summer. We will be flying in and out of Denver- for various reasons.

Day 1 North to Sheridan..actually Story-from Denver

Day 2 Visit Little Big Horn and Pompeys Pillar (I'm reading up on Lewis and Clark's expedition)
Stay the night in Red Lodge

Day 3 Drive Beartooth to Cooke City, head into YNP Lamar Valley, Stay the night in Cooke City

Day 4 head out to Chief Joseph Highway and over to Cody for the night

Day 5 through 8- Head into Yellowstone-stay 4 nights,

Day 8-10 Grand Teton NP

Day 11-19 Drive to Encampment/Riverside , WY-onto Grand Lake and Estes Park
Spend the week in RMNP-experience Trail Ridge rd-another road on the top of the world!

I'll be sad to go home!

daveyjones, the Chief Joseph Highway is another spectacular scenic drive between Cooke City,Montana heading towards Cody Wyoming. Here's the link that talks about it. There are photos on the left hand side of the page. We figured if we were out there we might as well experience it all.
