" Dad said they put up a fence to keep the Arctic winds from tipping the farm up on its south end."

I like that! What an image!

Dunno about now, but when I was growing up in Great Falls MT, our regular public schools were vastly better than any "gifted" program I've seen in SoCal.

Well, I don't live in California - southern or otherwise. My girl is in a gifted program in a private school here, so school quality is a concern. (I'm quite sure the schools there are good; my child just has Doogie Howserish tendencies. ) It would be nice, though, to be able to send her to a school that didn't require an arm and a leg every year!

Happy for ya! trying to get moved outta here myself. Back to MT, or somewhere nearby.

Tee hee... so did about half my graduating class at Great Falls HS (1972). And the atmosphere was decidedly pro-geek; in fact the most popular kid in school was also the #1 brainiac. The kids generally looked up to the eggheads, not the jocks, probably because you got more recognition for being a good student.

Out of 1500 kids, I only recall one who stood out as being unable to fit in, and that was largely her mom's fault (dressed the kid funny, stuff like that).

Sounds like maybe we should consider Great Falls, then (Don't worry, my kid's mom doesn't dress her funny. )

Seriously, our public schools here are stretching it to have a 60% graduation rate and we had 3 school shootings here in the past week. I'm a bit antsy about schools!

I don't suppose it's as good now, but we only had TWO dropouts during my 3 years at GFHS, and one was the poor kid whose mom dressed her funny. The other was the only teen pregnancy I knew of at the time, and she'd been kindof a loser all her life (had known her since the 5th grade).

The teachers there were wonderful. They had the trick of making kids learn want to or not, and of making peer pressure goad you toward wanting scholastic success. Of course it helped a lot that back then, most kids were a lot more self-disciplined -- this was before the soccer-mom era that lays out every moment of a kid's day for them, and thereby actively PREVENTS the kid from learning time management, AND actively deprives them of much-needed downtime. (Most adults need about 4 hours a day of sheer downtime, hence the popularity of fairly inane TV shows. Kids need it more than adults do, yet nowadays they get less downtime than ever!)

BTW school shootings (which are hardly new; there are some on record from the mid-1800s) are NOT "violence". They are loud, messy suicides. The idea is to "make everyone else suffer as much as they made ME suffer", and then to literally go out with a bang that no one can fail to notice (and just because they don't put the gun to their own head doesn't mean that wasn't the goal. Look up "suicide by cop".)

BNThere is on a distinguished road
Default Stay put!

I relocated there almost three years ago and couldn't wait to get out! There are a lot of drugies in town, with a history drug running.

Three restaurants…maybe, McDonalds closed down and a drug paraphernalia shop opened up right behind it....speaks volumes.

If you have family there it might help, but there is so much back stabbing and pettiness there for new comers that if anyone were to ask me if Glendive is a good little town – I would have to say….no.

As for housing - there are quite a few houses for sale asking Bismarck prices (be careful and have an out of town inspector review your home prospect - everyone is in kahootz with everyone else.

Do I sound angry - yes, am I angry, yes.

Hope your not relocting for the same company that relocated us - they didn't give me the full amount of the moving package once I was there to help supplement hotels costs (all rentals were discusting!). The house we finally did buy is imploding and we're going to have to walk away. Yet, we were told it was 'normal' by the real estate group even after they had a local contractor come in to 'verify' their statements...almost word for word! Only in Glendive.

Take it from me - once your there for a year, all you want is out.

Don't move to Glendive!!!

Thanks for your thoughts. We're not going because the insurance through the job was about 4 times what we're paying now.

BNSF is a great company to work for from what I hear, they just never keep you in one place for a long time...
